State average is 67.44 percent

Crosses installed near City Hall and in Crabapple signal the approach of Memorial Day
Milton will hold its sixth annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27, with retired Col. Michael D. Steele, a real-life company commander know from the 1999 book and 2001 film "Black Hawk Down" as the featured speaker. Steele, a Georgia native, was the company commander in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment during Operation Gothic Serpent's First Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia. Freedom isn’t free is the theme of the Memorial Day Ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m. at Milton City Hall. This year’s ceremony features local veterans, the City of Milton Fire Department Color Guard, performer Lewis Shaeffer singing the National Anthem, Taps as performed Bugles Across America and much more. This weekend's heavy rain will move out of Alpharetta, making way for mostly sunny skies by the weekend.
After yet another weekend filled with flood warnings and event cancellations throughout the metro area, Alpharetta is in for some sunny skies early this week and this Memorial Day weekend, though rain will be likely on Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, Big Creek remains above flood stage, affecting some yards in North Fulton and Forsyth counties. The creek was expected to fall below flood stage by early Tuesday. The Big Creek Greenway is closed due to flooding. A chance of scattered strong showers and thunderstorms continues Monday, with partly cloudy skies and a high of 86, according to the National Weather Service's Alpharetta forecast. Ga. Dept. of Education releases new performance indicator.
Today the Georgia Department of Education released its first Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) that measures elementary, middle and high schools on a 100-point scale. According to a press release, "the CCRPI is the new accountability system that replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measurement in Georgia." The department stated that the average score for Georgia’s elementary schools is 83.4, middle schools is 81.4 and high schools is 72.6. I am confused. Why are they announcing 2011-2012 results on May 2013? We are living in the technology era. How can we really help our children when adults share the results after a year. It would be much more meaningful, if we were able to access 2012-2013 results at this time. We should really have higher expectations from our department of education. I wonder if they have an explanation to this.   more ›
