Former Bartow Magistrate Clerk, Judge Accused of Stealing Money – Cartersville Patch A former Bartow magistrate clerk has been accused of stealing money from the county for more than two years. Penny D. Blackmon, 52, now of Lawley, AL, was arrested by a Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputy yesterday about 2:30 p.m., Sgt. Jonathan Rogers said. Blackmon faces 116 counts of theft by taking from a government employee for alleged thefts spanning from January 2003 to August 2005, according to the indictment, which was handed down by Bartow's August grand jury in case specially presented by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Mark Gary Pleads Guilty to Bribing Shirley Lasseter Gwinnett developer Mark Gary, 39, of Duluth, pleaded guilty Monday (Oct. 1) in federal district court in Atlanta to a charge of bribing then Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter in 2009 to secure approval of a proposed waste transfer station in which he held a personal stake. "Today’s guilty plea shows that paying off a public official is a losing bet," said U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates in a press release issued by her office. "Gwinnett County’s approval of competing real estate developments is not a game in which votes are for sale to the highest bidder. We will continue to aggressively pursue business people who corrupt the system by bribing public officials."   Gwinnett Commissioner Sentenced to 33 Months - Duluth Patch Former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, 64, was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison without parole in federal district court in Atlanta Wednesday (Sept. 5) for accepting bribes. Lasseter pleaded guilty May 31 to accepting $36,500 in bribes during 2011 from an FBI agent posing as a South Florida real estate developer to support a proposed real estate development in her district. Former Gwinnett commissioner asks Duluth officials, local business and civic leaders, and personal friends to write letters to judge who will be sentencing her.

Former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter has emailed Duluth city officials, the president of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, local civic leaders, and personal friends requesting character reference letters addressed to the judge who will preside over her Sept. 5 sentencing hearing for bribery. Lasseter asked that the letters be emailed to her defense attorney Stephen Johnson. Lasseter pleaded guilty May 31 in federal district court in Atlanta to accepting bribes from an undercover FBI agent posing as a real estate developer to support a proposed real estate development in Gwinnett County. Former Duluth Mayor, Gwinnett Commissioner Pleads Guilty To Bribery

Shirley Lasseter resigned from her Gwinnett Commission seat. Her son also has pleaded guilty to bribery and drug trafficking charges in federal court.

Shirley Lasseter, whose Gwinnett BOC district included Suwanee and Duluth, has pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges, authorities confirmed Thursday. Lasseter's sentencing is set for Aug. 6, and she faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Atlanta. The Duluth resident resigned her Gwinnett office Thursday. She accepted $36,500 in bribes from an undercover FBI agent posing as a South Florida real estate developer, authorities said. The bribery scheme concerned a proposed development on Boggs Road. Lasseter, a former mayor of Duluth, said earlier this year that she would not seek re-election to the Board of Commissioners.
