The road project to reroute Haynes Bridge Road to the east of the City Center site is four months behind schedule, and closing the road will increase construction hours.
A week from Thursday the top end of Haynes Bridge Road will be closed so the rerouting of the road can be completed by the end of the year. Hurricanes and tropical storms pulled Georgia Power, AT&T and other utility company crews away from Georgia, creating a major delay in the road project, according to Pete Sewczwicz, director of the Department of Engineering and Public Works. "We are about four months behind schedule," he said. Sewczwicz said city staff has been working with CW Matthews to find a way to speed the process up. He presented the solution to City Council at their meeting Monday night, Oct. 1. "That is to close Haynes Bridge Road between Old Milton and Academy Street until Dec. 31," he said. "This was news to me today," Mayor…

The developer wants to change the land use from office to high-density residential on property along Westside Parkway just north of Avalon.
A developer wants to build 300 apartments off Westside Parkway just north of Webb Bridge Road – and the recently approved Avalon project. The application is scheduled before the Alpharetta Planning Commission on Thursday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Community Development Director Diana Wheeler said the developer has been told about the city's goal of 85 percent for sale to 15 percent for rent residential ratio. Avalon was approved after North American Properties told Alpharetta City Council it had an agreement with a developer who had vested rights to apartment units to swap them for commercial property use. The property owner wanting to develop this property, Webb Bridge LLC, has not yet returned a call about this application. Facts…

The final section of Westside Parkway from Old Milton to Webb Bridge had its ceremonial parade of cars.
Alpharetta and North Fulton Community Improvement District officials turned Westside Parkway into a parking lot this afternoon, but it was only a prelude to the road's long-awaited opening an hour or so later. "This is the road that wouldn't be built but got built anyway," said Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle. Belle Isle said in 2009 when the ribbon was cut for the southern section of Westside, connecting with Mansell Road, the thought was that in just a few months they'd all be back together to open this section. "We had a foreclosure here, we had a bankruptcy here. We had a dispute among the property owners," the mayor said. Fast Facts About Westside Parkway Moses Brown, vice chairman of the North Fulton CID said the group's goal is to…

The first "official" use of the roadway after a ribbon cutting will be a parade of vehicles past the ceremony area from the southern end north to Webb Bridge Road.
Finally. Westside Parkway's last section will open on Monday, April 23, after a 3 p.m. ribbon-cutting. "We think this is going to be a big impact to trafifc on Highway 9 and on Haynes Bridge Road," said Brandon Beach, president of the Greatern North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and executive director of the North Fulton Community Improvement District. Beach was speaking to the Windward Rotary Club on Monday, April 16 at its meeting in the Atlanta Marriott Alpharetta. It took an extra four years as Prospect Park went bankrupt before it was even built, dragging the four-lane road into limbo with it. But once North American Properties bought the property, right of way for the part of Westside that was a piece of the Prospect Park land was …

Motorists can expect some lane closures and other interruptions as the contractor races to finish the long-delayed road.
Motorists driving along Old Milton Parkway continue to see construction on Westside Parkway as the contractor races to meet a 30-day construction schedule. Sidewalks were being poured on the first day of construction on March 26, along with grading work on the shoulders and median of the road. Fulton County's Water Department even managed to bury a 36-inch water main before work began at the Old Milton intersection. And that intersection is where motorists can see easily see work being done. On the south side of the intersection, an additional left turn lane is being added. The north side didn't even have pavement yet, so its construction is more of a clean slate. Above it all, workers began installing the temporary signals for the …

C.W. Matthews, the contractor picked by Alpharetta, started work on Monday to complete the last section of the road.
Alpharetta officials say the last section of Westside Parkway should be opened in April as long as this weather holds. Mayor David Belle Isle said crews will work 24/7 in some cases on the section between Old Milton Parkway and Webb Bridge Road. The final connection of Westside provides an arterial corridor along GA and should provide some traffic relief. Pete Sewczwicz, director of Engineering/Public Works for Alpharetta, explained what C.W. Matthews will be doing as the road contractor. The City Council awarded the $1.65 million contract on March 19. For about 85 percent of the road, he said they will mill the existing asphalt to make sure there are no issues under the road after it was poured years ago by Thomas Enterprises …

Alpharetta City Council awarded a $1.65 million bid to finish the roadway, with most of the funds coming from the GA Department of Transportation.
Sometime in June–or maybe even in late April, if the weather and utilitt companies cooperate–motorists will be able to drive between Windward Parkway and Mansell Road on Westside Parkway without a detour. Alpharetta approved a $1.65 million bid to complete the final section between Webb Bridge Road and Old Milton Parkway. Once the contract is accepted and signed by the winning bidder, CW Matthews, "in 30 days we will have the road open for traffic," said Pete Sewczwicz, director of Engineering and Public Works, in his presentation to City Council at Alpharetta City Hall Monday night, March 19. City Council members were hoping for as early as late April for an opening. The work could begin as soon as the end of this week, but utility …

Alpharetta has organized a public information meeting at City Hall for North American Properties to explain its plans for the former Prospect Park site.
Do you want to know what the latest develper for the old Prospect Park-call it Avalon now-has in store for 80 acres at Old Milton Parkway and GA 400? What do you think the developer should build there? Tonight's your chance to tell the city and developers what you think is best for the city. The public information meeting will be held at Alpharetta City Hall beginning at 7 p.m. It's being organized by the city of Alpharetta. Some residents have suggested a park should be built there, but that is very unlikely. North American Properties bought the land after the last developer went bankrupt. Giving away land isn't how a mortgage is paid off. The developer does promise a less dense project than the Prospect Park plan. But local residents and…

The city might not wait to complete sidewalks or install streetlights so the roadway can open to traffic sooner.
Alpharetta might hold a special meeting to make sure the last phase of Westside Parkway opens more quickly. Engineering/Public Works Director Pete Sewcwicz told City Council that they are looking to open the road as soon as possible. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has allocated $849,898.50 to complete Westside Parkway between Old Milton Parkway and Webb Bridge Road. Sewcwicz said project documents might be available as soon as Thursday for potential bidders. Rather than wait for traffic signal mast arms to be delivered–which will take four months–he said they plan to install temporary signals until the mast arms can be delivered. The earliest construction might start would be April, Sewcwicz said. The project must be …

New Mayor David Belle Isle said the road should open in March.
Alpharetta's new mayor and council members got a great start to their four-year terms Monday night when the North Fulton Community Improvement District presented them with a $789,000 check. The North Fulton CID gave the money to the city to help pay for right of way so the final section of Westside Parkway in the city can be completed. New Mayor David Belle Isle said during Monday's City Council meeting at Alpharetta City Hall that "We're going to be cutting the ribbon on Westside Parkway probably in March." Brandon Beach, executive director of the self-taxing group of commercial property owners, said it was formed with one road in mind, Westside Parkway. Beach, who also serves as the Sixth Congressional District representative on the …
