The contest is similar to geocaching, and is intended to educate the public about trees in Alpharetta.

Alpharetta's first Arbor Day Geo-Hunt contest starts Friday, Jan. 18 as a means to educate the public about our trees, their historical significance, and their importance as a valued natural resource in our community. The contest is sponsored by the Alpharetta Natural Resource Commission and will run from Jan. 18 through Monday, March 4. All prizes will be awarded at the Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday March 9, 10 a.m.–noon, at Rock Mill Park. The Geo-Hunt will kick off the City of Alpharetta’s Arbor Day Celebration for 2013. Alpharetta Plans to Plant Trees, Shrubs

A bid award is expected for plantings in the Kimball Bridge-Waters Road intersection area and other parts of the city.

Planting 95 trees and more than 2,900 pieces of groundcover and shrubs should please some Alpharetta residents after City Council was accused of not being tree friendly despite its Tree City USA designation. The city's Engineering and Public Works Department will ask City Council tonight to award a $151,774.80 bid to Ruppert Landscape to complete tree plantings from fiscal year 2012 and work along Kimball Bridge Road and Waters Road, according to an agenda report prepared by Geoffrey Sarra, senior engineer. FY 2012 Tree Planting The Design/Build aspect of this RFP will focus on landscape along Kimball Bridge Road and Waters Road within the limits of the completed Kimball Bridge Road at Waters Road Intersection Improvement project. Alpharetta City Center Tree Plans Displease Some Residents

The Mayor opened up an update on the project to public comment, and while some residents didn't like parts of plans, others supported it.

Alpharetta City Council opened up its City Center update to public comment on Monday, Aug. 6, and plenty of local residents had things to say about what trees will be saved in the 22-acre downtown site. Everyone was in favor of revitalizing downtown with a City Center, but what shape it will take still concerns some residents, with other ready to move forward. Jean Aldy of Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart, the landscape architectural firm for the project, started the presentation on the tree plan. She said one more specimen tree will be saved with the approved City Center site plan, compared to the concept plan developed in 2011 prior to the $29 million bond referendum vote. Aldy said while there are 104 trees considered to be …

to that end read my blog today where I point out that Council has repeatedly stated that the first plan was "not set in stone" - exact quote.....however, when pressed by us to change the location or footprint of the parking deck they state, "That was in the original drawing that citizens voted on at the bond referendum. It's a done deal." ??????????   more ›

Alpharetta Moves Downtown Trees Discussion to Top of Agenda

The increased public interest has prompted City Council to make plans to change its agenda so that residents can tell them what they think.

Are you planning on attending tonight's Alpharetta City Council meeting to hear about its tree plan for the City Center project? Good news: City Council is expected to move this workshop meeting to the start of the regular meeting at City Hall. Why is this good news for those residents wanting to speak out? It's because at a workshop meeting, traditionally the public doesn't get a chance to offer opinions to City Council. During a "regular" meeting, public comment is the norm. The majority of City Council will still have to approve this change to its agenda at the start of the meeting. So printed and online agendas most likely will show the old schedule of a workshop on City Center following the regular meeting. Can't make it to the 7:30 p…

Brooke Street Park Exists in Name

Alpharetta residents have a new park, but until the City Center is built, they probably won't be able to use it, as it will continue to be a construction site.

Brooke Street Park was intended to be a passive park from the start, but today it isn't much more than a couple of signs, some trees, squirrels and erosion control fences. The park is intended to be larger than just the section bounded by the existing Haynes Bridge Road and Brooke Street. But it got smaller before it will get bigger – the new route for Haynes Bridge Road uses property to the west of Brooke Street's "top half" rather than displacing more homes. What do you want to see for Brooke Street Park? Here are a few ideas, why don't you weigh in on yours? Alpharetta Keeps Reputation as a Tree City

For the 22nd year, the National Arbor Day Foundation gave it a Tree City USA designation.

The National Arbor Day Foundation announced that Alpharetta was named a Tree City USA in recognition of its commitment to urban forestry. This is the 22nd consecutive year that Alpharetta has earned this honor. Tree City USA communities must meet four standards to qualify for the program: The Tree City USA Program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees.  The program is administered in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Visit the Tree City USA page on the Arbor Day Foundation's website for more information.

Milton Fourth Graders Join Tree Planting Project

Crabapple Crossing, Birmingham Falls Elementary students will take home a tree to plant thanks to a local business owner.

Arbor Day will be celebrated on Feb. 17 and more than 260 fourth graders in Milton will roll up their sleeves and plant a tree. Fourth graders at Crabapple Crossing and Birmingham Falls Elementary schools in Milton will receive trees to take home and plant. The kids will become members of Fourth Grade Foresters. The project’s goal is to help revitalize a remarkable idea - observation of Arbor Day in America’s schools. State Farm agent W.J. Albertson, ChFC, CLU, has an office opening soon in Crabapple and sponsored the trees for Arbor Day in the community. “Trees are an important part of the Milton community and I felt this is a way for children to begin an appreciation for trees and their many benefits,” he said. “This project is made …
