A storm that appeared to produce a tornado in Paulding County has reached our area, and additional storms could be on there way.
UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: Georgia Power reports outages. Strong winds of up to 60 mph were to reach Milton, creating threatening conditions in the northwestern part of Fulton County, according to Atlanta Fulton County Emergency Management Agency. The severe storm should already have arrived in Crabapple, and was minutes away from Hopewell. Georgia Power reported at 2:24 p.m. that 8,700 customers were without power statewide, with approximately 5,500 of them in northwest Georgia and another 1,700 across metro Atlanta. The power company was working on 140 separate incidents. All after school activities have been cancelled by Fulton County Schools today because of the weather. Stay inside, and stay safe.

UPDATED, 2:12 p.m.: Students at Milton High School–and likely most schools in Milton, Alpharetta and the rest of North Fulton–were in tornado drill mode this afternoon and had been moved into safe areas within the interior of the building. "We are not allowed to release students while we are in this mode. Parents who arrive at school before the warning is lifted will be asked to remain in the Front Office," the school administration reported via email alert at 2:08 p.m. At 1:27 p.m. National Weather Service Doppler Radar continued to indicate a severe thunderstorm with rotation. The City of Alpharetta received an inquiry about weekly tests of our tornado warning sirens when severe weather is in the area. Weekly tests, normaly performed at Noon each Wednesday, are cancelled when National Weather Service forecasts for Alpharetta / North Fulton include the potential for severe weather.   more ›
