Alpharetta OKs Movie Theater at North Point Mall

General Growth Properties plans a 12-screen theater at the former Parisian store.

A new 12-screen movie theater with stadium seating may open at North Point Mall in time for the Thanksgiving holiday blockbuster releases. General Growth Properties, the owner of the mall, got approval from Alpharetta City Council on Monday, Feb. 27, to turn the old Parisian building into the 1,790-seat theater. The building is between the new Von Maur store and Macy's. Wendy Butler, the attorney representing the mall, said the theater will have stadium seating. It won't have access directly into the mall because of security concerns. If the new theater follows typical film start times, the mall's hours and the theater's hours will be different. 'Tower Heist' Is a Comical Caper With Occupy Wall Street Undertones

Get ready for a comedy about a bunch of co-workers who turn the tables on a Bernie Madoff-type bad guy.

Ben Stiller plays an apartment building manager who, along with the other building staff members, gets ripped off by penthouse resident Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda). When the employees realize they have been swindled, they plan their revenge in the form of a "Tower Heist." After an FBI agent (played by Tea Leoni) leaks word about a large stash of cash in Shaw's apartment, Stiller's character hires Slide, a two-bit cat burglar played by Eddie Murphy, to plan the heist. When Murphy makes it on the screen, about 40 minutes in, the movie finally picks up. "Tower Heist" spends the rest of its running time tracking the staff members (played by Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Michael Pena and Gabourey Sidibe) as they try to infiltrate the penthouse …

Alpharetta Dance Studio Needs Help To Win Pepsi Refresh Grant

The local dance and theater company wants to start a program to replace those lost to school budget cuts.

An Alpharetta theater and dance group needs the community's help to win a $25,000 grant for its children's theater program. Off Broadway Dance Center is participating in a contest sponsored by Pepsi that would give them $25,000 to expand the children's theater program at the studio. But the studio needs votes from the community to have a chance winning the grant. The Pepsi Refresh Project solicits ideas from organizations and makes it an online contest to determine which will be funded.  In the last year, Roswewater, Kudzu Playhouse and Blackwell Theatre all closed due to financial down turn of the economy. Rosewater used its Facebook page to announce it was leaving its Holcomb Bridge Road location in late January, with Kudzu letting its …

Audience, Cast Have 'A Dickens of a Time'

ACT1 Theater provides family-friendly performances for Alpharetta residents.

People young and old showed up for ACT1 Theater's latest production, "A Dickens' Christmas Carol: A Traveling Travesty in Two Tumultuous Acts" at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church's ACT1 Theater. While most know the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his journey to Christmas cheer, this particular performance has a twist to it. In this comedic version, The Styckes-Upon-Thump Theatre Company is in its 15th year of performing "A Christmas Carol" and the actors are getting worn out from having to play multiple roles both on and off stage. In addition, the show's star, Mrs. Bettina Salisbury (portrayed by Margaret Hollis), is ill and cannot perform. Despite these obstacles, the show continues but not without a bit of unwanted drama. While it …
