This Christmas season, Sandy Patterson asked Santa for an iPad. Patterson is unable to use a computer because two strokes have left her with hemiplegia and cognitive deficits—she is paralyzed on one side of her body and unable to type or navigate with a mouse. The only technology that she can use is one that has voice recognition software. Prior to her strokes, Patterson had risen through the ranks to work in management positions with New Jersey Bell (now Verizon). Her sister, Priscilla Aiken, says Patterson was and still is a very smart individual. “I used to seek her counsel many times after I became management at my company,” Aiken says. “She always gave me great advice.” Patterson recalls that she once used a computer to “send out a …

Holiday tradition sends fruit baskets to Dogwood Square
Alpharetta Rotarians continued one of their holiday traditions by assembling and distributing fruit baskets to senior residents at Dogwood Square located on Janis Lane in Alpharetta. The residents look forward to the annual visit and have enjoyed it for many years. The Rotarians were joined by some of their family members and Santa Claus to bring good tidings to the residents. “We have visited Dogwood Square at this time of year for more than 15 years. It is always a heartwarming and uplifting experience to all the Rotarians who come together to share the spirit of the season with these seniors,” said Bill Weeks, president of Rotary Club of Alpharetta. The city's restriction on how much rental housing can be in the city prevents approval, though planning commissioners want senior housing issues addressed.
An application to build a seniors only, affordable apartment complex along Webb Bridge Road next to GA 400 was recommended for denial by the Alpharetta Planning Commission Thursday night based on the city's limit of 15 percent rental units compared to 85 percent for sale residential homes. Planning commissioners want the whole issue of affordable senior housing addressed by City Council, but worried about the consequences of setting a precedence on this application. The applicant, however, was restricted by a state timetable that allows applications for the funding method through tax credits only at one time a year, starting on June 23.
