Chip Rogers to Earn More than Gov. Deal in Public Broadcasting Job

The former state Senator will earn $150,000 as executive producer, community jobs program with Georgia Public Broadcasting.

Chip Rogers will make more than Gov. Nathan Deal and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle each make in their public jobs when the former state Senator starts his new job Tuesday earning $150,000. The AJC reports that he'll be the seventh executive at Georgia Public Broadcasting earning six-figures annually, despite a rather pedestrian title: Executive producer, community jobs program. The position is paid solely through state taxpayers’ money. Rogers quit the state Senate less than a month after his re-election to his seat to take the position with GPB, which he said "is like a dream come true." He had yet to complete his previous term or take the oath for the new term before he resigned. Rogers came under fire for a meeting he organized in which Georgia …

Beach Keeps Jobs as Top Priority as a State Senator

Once the special election for Georgia Senate District 21 is certified, the North Fulton chamber president anticipates jumping right into his new "part-time" job.

Jobs, jobs, jobs. That continues to be Brandon Beach's mantra now that he is the apparent winner of the Georgia Senate District 21 seat after Tuesday's special election. "I'm going to work on what I said I was going to work on before the campaign: Foster an atmosphere that is a conducive environment to jobs, jobs, jobs," Beach said a day after the special election to fill a vacancy created when Chip Rogers quit before he even started what was to be his next term.  "We need lower taxes and less regulation. I said that since day one of the campaign, and that's what we are going to work on," the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce president and CEO – and soon to be state senator – said. Beach hopes the election is certified before the …

Beach Won in Fulton, Cherokee to Take Georgia Senate Seat

Only 9,501 of the more than 88,000 registered voters in District 21 decided who would represent eastern Cherokee, Milton and part of Alpharetta in the General Assembly for the next two years.

Brandon Beach not only carried Fulton County in the special election for the vacant state Senate District 21 seat, he also held the lead in Cherokee County in unofficial results filed with the Georgia Secretary of State's office. Beach, an Alpharetta resident, even beat Sean Jerguson of Holly Springs in the Holly Springs precinct by 14 votes, picking up 102 votes to his opponent's 88. While only 5.6 percent of the 34,646 registered voters in the Fulton County portion of the district cast a ballot in the special election, more Cherokee County voters showed up the polls to cast ballots in Tuesday's special election than election officials anticipated. More than 10 percent of the 75,212 registered voters in Cherokee County's portion of Senate…

Beach, Jerguson Raise Thousands in Campaign Cash

Candidates for the Georgia Senate District 21 have brought in tens of thousands of dollars into their campaign war chests.

Money is pouring into Tuesday's special election race for the Georgia Senate District 21 seat. The race, hotly contested between Holly Springs resident Sean Jerguson and North Fulton Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Brandon Beach, an Alpharetta resident, is the source of nearly $50,000 in contributions made in its short lifespan of one month. Jerguson has raised $20,158 and has spent $694.43, which leaves him with $19,463.57 cash on hand.  Beach has raised $25,250 during the short period, $11,038.14 of which he reports as being carried over from the July 2012 Republican primary.  That bring his total contributions to $36,813.14. The Alpharetta resident has nearly spent as much as he's taken in. Beach is reporting expenditures totaling $…

Voter Turnout Low in State Senate Election

When so few registered voters head to the polls, your vote can have a great impact on an election.

More than 500 people in Milton and small portions of other North Fulton communities have voted in a special election for Georgia Senate District 21. That compares to the 700 plus Cherokee voters who cast ballots by midday Thursday in advance voting. Friday, Jan. 4 is the last day for advance voting before the Jan. 8 election. Eliglbe Fulton voters in Senate District 21 can cast their ballots at 30 South Main Street, Suite 1 in Downtown Alpharetta, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The voting location is adjacent to Alpharetta City Hall in the former Main Street Antique Market. Voters must pick a replacement for Chip Rogers, who officially won reelection in November, but resigned less than a month later to work for Georgia Public Broadcasting. …

UPDATE: Candidates, Organizers Discuss Debate Cancellation

Brandon Beach, Sean Jerguson, Michael Fitzgerald and Lori Pesta weigh in on why the planned January debates for the Senate District 21 seat fell through.

Both candidates in the Georgia Senate District 21 special election set for Jan. 8, 2013, cited poor communication and time constraints as the reasons why a proposed debate between the two was cancelled by the state GOP. Sean Jerguson told Patch that he was contacted by Michael Fitzgerald, chairman of the Georgia GOP's Sixth Congressional District, shortly after he qualified on Dec. 11 and accepted a proposal to participate in a debate scheduled for Jan. 3, 2013.  He said that after this initial contact, he heard nothing further from Fitzgerald or his office. Jerguson claims he was never made aware of a second proposed Jan. 5 debate. Jerguson told Patch that he was "willing and able" to debate challenger Brandon Beach at that time, however…

Beach is expected to take on State Rep. Sean Jerguson (R-Holly Springs), who announced his intentions last week to qualify and run for the senate seat, which was vacated by former Senator Chip Rogers.  Jerguson has to also resign from the House District 21 seat he was reapportioned into and subsequently won in the Nov. 6 general election.
