Reminder: Georgia Sales Tax Holiday Friday, Saturday

For the first time since 2009, Georgia shoppers will not have to pay state and local sales and use taxes on back-to-school items.

Students in Fulton County return to school Monday, Aug. 13, so if you still have a few more back-to-school items to purchase you are in luck this weekend. Georgia's sales tax holiday on back-to-school items is set for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10 and 11. The last time Georgia had a sales tax holiday was in 2009. According to the Department of Revenue, sales tax will be suspended on general school supplies with a sales price of less than $20 per item, clothing (including shoes) worth $100 or less, and computers and computer accessories with a sales price of $1,000 or less. North Fulton Community Charities Needs School Supplies

The charitable organization will hold its Back to School Health and Wellness Fair on Aug. 11.

North Fulton Community Charities is collecting school supplies for its Back to School Health and Wellness Fair, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m.-noon. The local charitable organization offers health screenings and fun activities for children durign the health fair, including information and resources to help families have a healthy and safe school year. Each year NFCC looks to hand out more than 1,000 backpacks, plus basic school supplies to go in them, to children whose families need the assistance. The organization needs financial assistance, donations of school supplies, health and safety exhibitors and volunteers to set up and help run the fair. Alpharetta Charity, Churches Partner in 'Tools 4 School'

Act Together Ministries is getting help from Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church to gather school supplies for foster kids and children from low-income families.

Act Together Ministries will partner with local churches to help prepare foster children and children from low-income families for the new school year on Aug. 5. Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church in Alpharetta and The Vine Community Church in Cumming are working with the Alpharetta-based charity in this "Tools 4 School" event. Children will receive school supplies, haircuts and medical and dental screenings. The kids will bring their school supply lists to “shop” in the special school supply store set up with donations from the community. For this store, Act Together Ministries needs donations of school supplies including: backpacks, pencils, calculators, pens, notebooks, pencil boxes, rulers, markers, erasers, and more. North Fulton Community Charities Needs USB Flash Drives for Students

High school students must have USB "keys," but some families don't have money for any supplies.

It's coming down to the wire for school supply donations for North Fulton Community Charities Back to School Health and Wellness Fair, but the charitable organization is way short of one key school supply. Eden Purdy, program director at NFCC, said only 25 USB flash memory drives have been donated, and they need 200 more. With Fulton County Schools opening to students on Monday, Aug. 15 to start the school year, children are gearing up for returning back to the classroom. For some parents, this can cause tremendous stress and one more added expense in an already stretched budget. NFCC tries to reduce this financial burden and make sure low-income and disadvantaged children start school with the supplies they need to succeed academically. …
