Alpharetta Kicks Off Holiday Season in Front of Huge Crowd

The 35th annual Christmas Tree Lighting event started with holiday-themed entertainment from North Point Community Church before Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived and the tree was lit.

It took two stages for all of the events in Alpharetta's Christmas Tree Lighting to be held, with North Point Community Church using the larger, "lower" stage near Canton Street for its music and entertainment. Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle not only brought his children on stage for the traditional reading of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas to the crowd. He also had them join in the reading. Then it was time for the tree to light up the mini park at North Main and Milton Avenue, just behind the stage. Alpharetta Christian Academy, Rhythm and Shoes, and Maddie Monroe also provided entertainment.

Thanks to Melissa Vater at Alpharetta Christian Academy for reminding me that more groups in addition to North Point Community Church were involved in the festivities and entertainment. If you have some good photos from the Tree Lighting, add them to this article!   more ›

NORAD Will Track Santa Delivering Gifts on Christmas Eve

The military uses the latest in technology to keep an eye on the jolly old elf's path around the world.

For 364 days out of the year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spends its time tracking airplanes, missiles, space ships—anything flying near the United States and Canada. But on Christmas Eve, a team of volunteers spends the night tracking a very special pilot: Santa Claus. "We are the only organization that has the technology, the qualifications and the people to do it," NORAD said on its website. "NORAD tracks Santa, but only Santa knows his route, which means we cannot predict where and when he will arrive at your house." Santa usually starts at the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean and travels west, NORAD noticed, meaning he moves from the South Pacific to New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe …

Cookies With The Clauses Brings Joy to Kids from 1 to 92.

Kids, young and old, came to the Alpharetta Community Center today to dance, eat and most importantly meet Mr. and Mrs. Clause.

At this year's Cookies with the Clauses kids were not only able to mingle with the famous Clauses, but also dance to Christmas music, play games and decorate their own cookies. Cookies with the Clauses is an annual event sponsored by the Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Department.  The event also provided a magician who made balloon animals, and a DJ who kept them entertained with games as well as music. The event asked participants to bring in an unwrapped toy to be donated to Toys For Tots. And for those who did, they got to meet a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, who was standing over the donation boxes. The Alpharetta Community Center is also offering up its services to Mr. and Mrs. Clause by allowing Alpharetta children to put their …
