Haynes Bridge Road Reopens Saturday in Downtown Alpharetta

The closure was needed to finish construction by the end of the year, which was promised to Fulton County so a new Alpharetta Library branch could be built on the City Center property.

The city of Alpharetta announced that the relocated section of Haynes Bridge Road between Old Milton Parkway and Academy Street will reopen on Saturday, Dec. 29. The public can start driving on the new section beginning at noon. Look for a bunch of city officials, contractors, politicians and media people to be out there on Monday morning for an official ribbon cutting. After months of construction, it will once again be easier to navigate through downtown Alpharetta – and get to the downtown Publix. Relocating the top end of Haynes Bridge to the east allows the city to combine its downtown properties to build its City Center. “The opening of this section of Haynes Bridge Road marks the first major milestone in the development of our City …

Finally Open: Douglas Road Bridge Completed

The city of Alpharetta announced the new bridge opened today, Oct. 21.

The Douglas Road Bridge opened today, Oct. 21, but be careful. Alpharetta spokesman James Drinkard said the contractor isn't done working next to the bridge. A release by Drinkard earlier this afternoon announced the bridge over Caney Creek opened at 10 a.m., so people in the neighborhood already knew about it. (Did you cross over it? Did you take a photo, even with your smartphone? Add it to this story!) "The contractor has additional work to accomplish adjacent to the bridge; however, so motorists are encouraged to proceed with caution," Drinkard said in the release. During the summer the Douglas Road roundabout just south of the bridge at its intersection with Southlake Drive and Leeward Walk Circle was opened. Final landscaping and …

Bob, I recommend they name the bridge, "The Pete Sewczwicz Bridge Over Caney Creek" in honor of the Alpharetta Diector of Engineering and Public Works who saw the project through to completion. It is good to have the bridge and road open again. Thanks Pete.   more ›

You Can Sort Of Get There From Here: Douglas Roundabout Opens

However, bridge construction over Caney Creek in Alpharetta hasn't been completed, forcing the detour to continue.

Alpharetta's first roundabout is open, creating the new intersection of Douglas Road and Southlake Drive, but a contruction detour continues nearby. The roundabout is substantially complete and is open, said Assistant City Adminstrator James Drinkard in a news release on Friday, July 29. Final landscaping and additional aesthetics will be installed in and around the roundabout and bridge replacement in the late fall. Drinkard said though the roundabout is open, the bridge over Caney Creek on Douglas Road is still under construction. Individuals are not permitted to cross the bridge. Detour signs will remain, instructing motorists to utilize Jones Bridge Road and McGinnis Ferry Road to access various streets north of Caney Creek. Rules of …

Work Continues on Douglas Road Traffic Circle and Caney Creek Bridge

Douglas Road remains closed due to construction

A road project on Douglas Road at Southlake Drive will be completed by the first day of school, promises Alpharetta's director of Engineering and Public Works. "It will be ready and operational by Aug. 15," said Pete Sewcwicz. Since June 6, a portion of Douglas Road between Jones Bridge Road and McGinnis Ferry Road has been closed to allow for improvements to be made on the intersection of Douglas Road and Southlake Drive and for the replacement of the nearby bridge over Caney Creek. This week pavement work was to begin. Georgia Power was installing light poles. Asphalt will be completed in the next two weeks and striping will follow. Sewcwicz said the contractor and his department are focusing on the roundabout now. Materials and a crane …

Yes, this story wasn't as clear as the latest story I wrote about the roundabout and bridge. Eight days after this was posted–on July 29–I updated with a separate, new story that obviously wasn't seen by as many residents that did make these points clear. http://patch.com/A-kCML.   more ›

Alpharetta Picks Engineering Design Firm For Haynes Bridge Shift

Moving the last section of Haynes Bridge Road east allows the city to combine the 22-acres of property assembled for a redevelopment plan.

An engineering design firm's creative approach to solving storm water and detention issues was picked to help Alpharetta create plans to shift Haynes Bridge Road west as part of the city's redevelopment plans. Eric Graves, senior engineer for Transportation in the city's Engineering & Public Works Department, said the realignment will allow the city to combine the 22 acres of property it owns, including several acres now on the east side of Haynes Bridge. Combining the property is an important part of the city's plans, which include a new Fulton County Library branch, a new City Hall, a 5-acre park and a parking deck to serve these buildings and the park space. The new alignment begins at the north end at the intersection of Brooke and …

Roundabout Coming To Milton's Hopewell, Francis, Cogburn Intersection

While resident votes were close, other factors were considered when making the decision.

Milton City Council agreed with its Public Works director to provide a roundabout at the Hopewell, Francis, Cogburn intersection, basing the decision on resident input, cost and safety. The project began in January of this year and presented two alternatives for the intersection: a traditional traffic signal with turn lanes; and a single-lane roundabout. Public input was encouraged throughout the process, which resulted in 97 comments, 40 of which were  the direct result of a public information hearing that was held on April 28. Once tallied the results concluded that 47 percent were in favor of a traffic light while 48 percent preferred a roundabout, 5 percent were indifferent. Many comments expressed the desire to see something done …

Sounds like this decision was based on a difference of 200K between the two options. This is an intersection to get through on the way to work and will only get busier in coming years. I also see the grade of the road as a negative factor in this situation.   more ›
