The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety’s firefighters have been fired up about reading at Alpharetta Elementary School. Firefighters from Alpharetta’s Station No. 5 participated in a program to promote reading by visiting the school and conducting reading sessions with students in the classroom. Firefighters Inspiring Reading Every Day is a collaborative effort between Alpharetta’s finest and the Alpharetta Elementary School, according to a news release from the department's spokesman, George Gordon. Students improve their reading comprehension skills, sight words and phonics by participating in classroom exercises and by online programs. They use songs, games, books and a rewards program to enhance their skills. The Alpharetta …

The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System received the 2013 Big Read grant, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. A library system spokesperson said in a release that the goal of the libraries aligns perfectly with those of the Big Read: to stop the decline of literary reading in America by encouraging reading. This “one book/one community” opportunity offers everyone the chance to read and discuss a single book within their communities and is a wonderful chance for real dialog. Participants throughout Fulton County and Atlanta will read the same book, A …

Patch asked newly-published children's book author Jo Ann Kairys to tell us about the most magical children's book on the shelves this holiday season. Here is her list.
Kids say and do the darndest things, right? And so often, they provide tender or hilarious or wonder-filled inspiration for picture books. One day I heard my granddaughters complaining about the rain as they thumped on the window. Eager to get outdoors, they waited impatiently for the storm to end. Suddenly, they pretended they were the rain. “SWOOSH! SPLAT! SWISH!” Their sounds were innocently poetic, perfect ingredients for a rhyming picture book. Putting it all together in story form is when the magic happens—a sound in just the right place, a vibrant image that brings the story alive, and characters who draw you right into their world. There are so many wonderful children’s picture books. I’d like to share a few that I think have that …

Ken Scott, the "Magical Storyteller," performed his magic show entitled "One World Magical Stories" for students at Manning Oaks Elementary School in December. In his show, Scott encouraged students to check out books from the media center, obtain a public library card, taught them where to find certain books in the library, taught about different countries, and emphasized care for books through his creative and engaging magic show. The cheers and screams were electric as Ken Scott turned a stuffed rabbit into a real one, did magic with a dancing handkerchief, and introduced Croco, a funny and cantankerous Alligator puppet, who turned three hankies into an American Flag. His show is a great way to send off children and encourage them …

The Alpharetta Public Library's Lap Sit reading program is a great way for children to learn the joys of reading.
If you’re a mom (or dad) of young children and are looking for a reason to get out of the house on Tuesday mornings, then the Lap Sit reading program at the Alpharetta Public Library is the place for you. Aside from socializing with others their own age, children are entertained by several lively readings as well as an activity. This week's theme was snow. Interestingly enough, it was supposed to be last Tuesday's theme but the program had to be cancelled due to the real life snow that accumulated in the Alpharetta area. With memories of snow angels and sledding fresh on their minds the children listened as librarian Judy Grandillo read Millions of Snowflakes, a story about a little girl's adventures in the snow. After another wintry …
