A roundabout would cost more, but would keep traffic moving continuously at the intersection.
Close to 100 people had given Milton their opinions on concept plans to fix the Birmingham Road-Hopewell Road intersection, and most of them prefer a roundabout solution to a traditional traffic signal with left turn lanes solution. Public Works Director Carter Lucas presented data about the intersection, the two concept plans and comments from city residents (and even some non-residents) during Wednesday's Milton City Council work session at City Hall. Why change is needed: Lucas said anyone making a left hand turn at the intersection causes traffic backups even for those wanting to turn right. The council meeting followed an hour-long public information session about the intersection improvement ideas. Of the 93 people who took the …

Cogburn Road has now reopened.
The ribbon has been cut, and it's just a few more hours until the months-long detour around Cogburn Road will end. Milton's first big project on its own has replaced a bridge local residents say must be at least 70 years old. Hitson Construction replaced the bridge that spanned Cooper Sandy Creek between Bethany Bend and Webb Road with an arched culvert. Public Works Director Carter Lucas said it will be able to handle the 10,000 vehicles a day that were crossing it in 2009 when a survey put it at the top of the list of projects. The bridge project cost $478,020.39. Ralph Sims, who lives just up the street from the construction site, said he expects the traffic will be up to 15,000 vehicles a day, as it has always been a "cut through" …

The detour that has put traffic on Hwy. 9 will end before the first day of school, though shoulder work remains on the road.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Look for photos and another update on the reopening of Cogburn Road later this morning. Milton has a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled. The Cogburn Road bridge will reopen at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, just in time for the heaviest rush hour times. The bridge has been closed since May 19 so a contractor could replace the old bridge, which was narrow and deteriorating. Prior to the opening, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. to mark the end of Milton’s first major construction project, according to a news release from the city's Communications manager, Jason Wright. When the bridge opens, motorists will be able to travel Cogburn Road unimpeded, and all detours will end. However, the work hasn't completed on …

No word has been provided yet on when the department will reschedule this public meeting to discuss the upcoming Alpharetta water transmission main capital improvement project. The project involves the installation of approximately 7 miles of water mains and its ancillaries in Alpharetta and Johns Creek. The new pipeline will begin at the intersection of Jones Bridge Road and Buice Road, and will end at Mayfield …

Tuesday is going to be a dry day for residents along Webb Bridge and Shirley Bridge roads. The Fulton County Department of Public Works-Water Services has notified the City of Alpharetta that water service will be shut off in that area between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on June 7. The water shut off is necessary so the water system can switch to upgraded facilities installed as part of the Webb Bridge Road/Shirley Bridge Road Intersection Improvement project, according to a news release from the city. Residents in the following locations should anticipate lack of water services throughout the day: For more information about the water shut off, contact Earl Burrell with Fulton County Department of Public Works Water Services at 404-612-7462.

The FHWA has a video about modern roundabouts that is mostly accurate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhHzly_6lWM ). Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world. Search www.iihs.org for FAQs and safety facts. The safety comes from the ‘slow and go’ operation instead of the ‘stop or go fast’ way a stop light works. The smaller size of the modern roundabout is what makes …   more ›
