OPINION: In Iowa, the Fat Lady's Lined Up and Ready to Sing

Here are my picks for the finish in tonight's caucuses. What are yours? Use the poll below to vote for a candidate and the comments section to tell us why you think that person will finish on top.

Editor's Note: Todd Richissin is Patch's regional editor for Iowa. He shares some special insight on today's caucuses in that state. Georgia's vote on the Republican primaries will be on March 6. So, who cares about the caucuses anyway, then? Check out the attached video.  Today, the end is here. After dozens of town hall meetings, hundreds of candidate campaign stops and way, way too many political commercials, the 2012 Iowa GOP caucuses are all over but the voting — and the counting. Which means there’s still time for some predicting. We want to know who you think will win the Iowa Caucuses -- and we want to know why. Vote below in our poll, then go to our comments section to tell us why you think that candidate will win. Here is a …

Iowans, like the rest of us, are tired of seeing all those guys, who kind of blur together after a while, so since they all believe that the home-town girl, Bachman, has no chance to win, they'll vote for her as some sort of protest and she'll surprise everybody.   more ›

High School Football Predictions

Alpharetta, Milton and King's Ridge face tough opponents this week.

I was leaving church Wednesday night when I heard the beautiful words: “Thank God for football season.” “Amen,” I thought, as I felt a comfortably cool breeze hit me under the striking golden hues of sunset. “That’s right,” I was still thinking. The summer heat has broken and become Chamber-of-Commerce quality. College and pro games have started, there’s a game on TV almost every night and our favorite sons are playing high-school ball every weekend in our neighborhood stadiums. I took a deep breath to take it all in. How great it is! “Football season is beautiful,” I said in agreement with my fellow church member. She rolled her eyes. The mother then rattled off what it’s like to have a young boy playing in a youth league in Gwinnett …

High School Football Predictions

Can Milton right the ship after last week's loss?

I was humbled a bit last week in my predictions of high-school football games played in Patch coverage areas from Stone Mountain to Cumming. After a can-you-believe-it 21-3 record the first week, I cooled off to a 16-6 mark last week (38-9 overall). I only missed badly on one pick. Really. So, let's lace 'em up for another week. Are you ready? Harrison at Milton: Well, it’s clear the Milton Eagles can’t continue what they started last week — eight turnovers in a 42-16 loss to Walton. A chance for redemption and to get back into the win column comes calling this Friday when winless Harrison visits. Now before you pencil in a second win for the Eagles, consider this: Harrison may be 0-2, but both losses were one-score decisions to undefeated…

High School Football Predictions

Will I be a jinx or a lucky charm for your team this week?

I’ll never forget the exchange of conversations I had with a Gwinnett County football coach several years ago when I worked for a pictures-and-words outfit out of Atlanta (I think they’re in Dunwoody now). “Scott,” the coach said of the weekly high school football prediction column I wrote. “Don’t pick us this week. You jinxed us last time.” Sure enough, that happened, although I wouldn’t call it a jinx. I picked his team to win the week before against an inferior team, and the coach’s team played spectacularly awful and lost. His team’s inability to hold onto the ball had more to do with it than what I wrote. OK, I said to the coach. Why not? It was an important game and I could be the bad guy and pick against his team. Result? His team …
