The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System received the 2013 Big Read grant, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. A library system spokesperson said in a release that the goal of the libraries aligns perfectly with those of the Big Read: to stop the decline of literary reading in America by encouraging reading. This “one book/one community” opportunity offers everyone the chance to read and discuss a single book within their communities and is a wonderful chance for real dialog. Participants throughout Fulton County and Atlanta will read the same book, A …

Movie shot in various locations in North Fulton and metro-Atlanta area.
Local audiences may recognize some familiar faces and places in "Parental Guidance," opening Christmas Day and starring Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei. Filmed in the Atlanta area, crews converged on Johns Creek's Ocee Park around Halloween last year for some pivotal Little League baseball scenes, and spent plenty of time at other North Fulton sites. Casting directors didn't have to look far for baseball players – they used members from the Ocee Athletic Association teams as extras. "It was a very big deal for the kids," said Rosemary Taylor, senior communications manager for the City of Johns Creek. "We're very proud of our city parks and athletic facilties and very fortunate to have the Ocee and Newtown athletic associations…

A group of men stranded in the wilderness get hunted down by a pack of wolves. It's primal, it's primitive…it's Grey, and it opened today at AMC Mansell 14 in Alpharetta.
Liam Neeson and a bunch of roughneck oil riggers go down in a plane crash in the frozen Alaska wilderness in "The Grey." Neeson plays John Ottway, a loner and the alpha dog, of sorts, among the surviving men of the crash. They are forced to stay together to battle the elements and a pack of wolves, set on making them the next meal. A supporting cast includes Dallas Roberts as the smart sensitive guy, Dermot Mulroney as the sad dad missing his kid, and Frank Grillo as the Latino hothead. They face frostbite, wolf bite, drowning, and falling from great heights. Harsh outcomes for both man and beast. In the middle of this life and death situation there's time for conversation among the men. We get to know their back story and learn that they …

The Muppets are back and better than ever.
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Animal and all the rest are back together again in "The Muppets." Jason Segel co-wrote and stars in the film as Gary. He and girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) head to Hollywood on a dream trip. Tagging along is Gary's brother Walter, a cute little puppet who is the world's biggest Muppets fan. Upon arriving in Hollywood, they find out the Muppets' studio has fallen into disrepair. Kermit and his gang of friends have long since parted company, but reunite just in time to put on a telethon to raise cash to buy back the studio. An all-star cast of Muppets and live actors make this a pretty good movie for young and old. Listen, I know the the Muppets are not for everyone – they have always been in a …

Celebrate the new Winnie the Pooh movie!
The new Winnie the Pooh movie isn't in 3D. It doesn't include the voice of Justin Timberlake, or a thumping soundtrack, or neon colors and loud noises. No, it's just the Hundred Acre Wood you've come to know and love, plus a few 2011 updates to keep it fresh. And if you've got a kid born after 2005, it's their first chance to see Pooh on the big screen. United Artists North Point Market 8 is showing the film at 12:10 p.m., 2:10 p.m., 4:35 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. I expect we'll be there with with bees painted on our cheeks, holding a stuffed Pooh by the paw, waiting to see what Eeyore will have as a tail this time around.
