Alpharetta Schools Honored for AP Achievement

High schools in Alpharetta and Milton named 'AP Honor Schools.'

More than half of Fulton County’s high schools – including Alpharetta and Milton high schools – have been named “AP Honor Schools” and leaders in offering students the most challenging curricula available. The College Board, the organization in charge of Advanced Placement and the SAT, on Wednesday named 13 Fulton high schools to its annual list of high-performing high schools.  The 2013 awards are based on the Class of 2012’s testing results and are grouped into five categories: AP Merit Schools, AP STEM Schools, AP STEM Achievement Schools, AP Challenge Schools, and AP Access and Support Schools.  “Having such a high number of schools named AP Honor Schools is extraordinary,” said Fulton Schools Superintendent Robert Avossa. “Two of our …

Milton's Josh Harris Picked Wake Forest Over Tennessee

The offensive linemen for the Eagles will become a member of the Demon Deacon college football team.

Milton High School senior Josh Harris signed a letter of intent to play football for Wake Forest University this week. The 6 foot, 4 inch, 295-pound offensive linemen was joined on signing day by his parents, his two sisters and his brother – and most of the other 10 Eagles who made commitments to college football programs. Josh played offensive tackle and guard for the Eagles. His dad, Tom Harris, said his son turned down an offer late last week to play for the Tennessee Volunteers.

Milton's Carl Lawson Leads Recruits on Signing Day

Lawson will head to Auburn, while 10 of his teammates have signed with 6 different college teams.

Eleven Milton High School football players signed to play college football this week, including Carl Lawson, the No. 2 recruit in the nation, according to ESPNU. Lawson and teammate Payton Barber signed to Auburn, according to Milton Eagles Football. Josh Harris and Cory Helms were Wake Forest signees. Eason Fromayan completed requirements for high school graduation early, and signed with TCU early. His time at TCU started Jan. 7, and he'll be working out with the team as early as this month. Former Milton Principal Will Take Over at Riverwood for the Interim

Tesch says he will stay at the Sandy Springs high school until a new principal is hired. Milton High School became an award-winning institution during his 12 years there.

  Provided by Anne Boatwright Former Milton High School Principal Ron Tesch has been named interim principal at Riverwood International Charter School.  Former principal Chris Triolo resigned earlier this month. He worked closely with Tesch before his departure.  Tesch, a Michigan native, has led administrations for many high schools, several of them Blue Ribbon schools, such as Ann Harbor Huron High School in Michigan, suburban Chicago Highland Park High School, and Edina High School in suburban Minneapolis. Milton High School became an award-winning institution during his 12 years there. MaxPreps Names Milton Eagle to 2012 All-American Football Team

Carl Lawson, a senior who played on the defensive line, was the only North Fulton high school player who earned the honor.

Carl Lawson, a member of the Milton High Eagles varsity football team, was one of three Georgians named to the first team defense on the MaxPreps 2012 All-American Football Team. "The Class Region 5-AAAAAA Defensive Player of the Year, the Auburn commit amassed a whopping 26 sacks as a senior," according to a story by MaxPreps' Stephen Spiewak. The 6-feet, 3 inch, 245-pound Lawson played his senior season on the defensive line. Other George first team defensive players were: A few Georgians also were named to the second team by MaxPreps.

Milton High Swimmer Earns Student-Athlete of the Month Honors

Katie Grover is ranked nationally as a swimmer and maintains a 4.0 GPA.

A Milton High School swimmer was the female Student-Athlete of the Month for December honored by XL212. Katie Grover of Milton High and Conor Linneen of Fellowship Christian School were honored for their outstanding achievements on the field, in the classroom, and in their respective communities.   Katie Grover Katie holds several of the swimming records at Milton, and she is ranked in the top 10 nationally for events such as the 100 Fly and the 100 Backstroke. So far as a junior, she has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career.  Katie also serves her community by giving swim lessons and faithfully serving her church, St. Thomas Aquinas. State Farm Supports High School Habitat Chapters

Milton High School and Blessed Trinity High School received grants from the insurance company.

Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapters at Milton High School and Blessed Trinity Catholic High School have been selected to receive matching grants from State Farm for their outstanding work in creating affordable housing in partnership with low-income families. Blessed Trinity Catholic High School received a $10,000 matching grant and Milton High School received a $2,000 matching grant. The campus chapters are two of 27 campus chapters nationwide to be awarded a matching grant from State Farm.  A campus chapter is a student-led, student-initiated organization on a high school or college campus that partners with the local Habitat affiliate to build, fundraise, advocate and educate to support the work of Habitat for Humanity. Milton Coach Michael Scott Loses Battle with Cancer

Community shows outpouring of support for his family through hundreds of Facebook posts.

Milton Eagles Coach Michael Scott lost his battle with pancreatic cancer late Saturday evening, Dec. 1, according to a post by his wife on the Prayers for Michael Scott Facebook page. More than 1,200 people have viewed Mary-Jane Scott's goodbye and prayer for her husband since Sunday morning, with more than 300 of them adding their comments on the Prayers for Michael Scott Facebook page created to for updates and community support. My sweet bear, my best friend, Mike, was called home to be with the Lord around 10:30pm tonight. Milton Eagle's Lawson Nominated for Player of the Year Award

The local high school athlete was one of four Georgia students selected.

The Milton High School Eagles' Carl Lawson was one of four Georgia high school football players nominated to the 2013 U.S. Army Player of the Year Award on Monday, Nov. 26. The U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee has nominated 16 high school seniors for the award, considered high school football's highest honor. The six finalists for the award will be announced Wednesday, Nov. 28. The U.S. Army Player of the Year will be crowned during the U.S. Army Awards Dinner on Jan. 4, 2013, in San Antonio. The winner will be presented with the Ken Hall Trophy, modeled after Ken "Sugar Land Express" Hall, high school football's all-time leading rusher. Milton High Helps Fill NFCC Food Pantry's Shelves

The faculty, staff and students sent two North Fulton Community Charities trucks back to its food pantry filled with food.

Milton High Assistant Principal Heidi Ballog thanked the faculty, staff and students for participating in the North Fulton Community Charities Food Drive. "The volunteers said this is the most any high school has given yet," Ballog said in an email today. She shared a few shout outs as well: "Again, thank you Milton family for your generosity and have a wonderful Thanksgiving break," Ballog said.
