Milton Woman Victimized Again, Losing $9,000 Tax Refund

A Hopewell Plantation Drive resident found that her identity had been stolen again, with a suspect getting her $9,000 tax refund. The local resident told Milton police on Jan. 4 that she learned identity fraud had been committed when she tried to file a tax return in September 2012 and was told one ad already been filed, with a tax refund issued on a prepaid card. Suspect Charged Two Months After Homeless Man Threatened

  An Atlanta man was arrested on Sept. 14, two months after he allegedly threatened to have someone slit a homeless man's throat. Two homeless men who lived in the woods off Westside Way complained to police on July 14 that a man who allegedly robbed one of the men threatened one of them enough that they ran for their lives. One of the men said the suspect showed up in the homeless camp after being incarcerated for armed robbery, and then threatened to have someone slit his throat. Both men ran away. When the threatened man tried to return to the homeless camp to get his belongings, he said the suspect and some other unknown people met him and started following him when he again left. Cash, Credit Cards Stolen from Shoebox in Closet

  A Milton woman told police someone stole her passport, Social Security card, original birth certificate, 12 credit cards and $10,000 in cash from a shoebox inside her closet. The woman said she had a verbal argument with her live-in boyfriend on Aug. 29, according to an incident report by Milton police. On the next day, she went into her closet to gather her belongings to move out. That is when she noticed a bag containing those items was missing. The last time she knows all the items were in the shoebox was Aug. 23, when she went out of town. She returned home on Aug. 27, but didn't notice the cash, credit cards and identification was missing until two days later. Milton police advised her to contact credit unions and to cancel her …

Fry's Customer Finds Stolen Credit, Debit Cards in Milton

A Fry's customer in Milton found a bag containing credit, debit and store gift cards that involved identity fraud against at least seven people. Milton police were called to the electronics store at 2:20 p.m. on July 27 after that customer found a plastic bag in the parking lot containing the cards and various forms of identification for different people. One of the debit cards belonged to a woman who was a victim of an auto break-in on July 22 in Alpharetta, while another victim had his car entered on July 27 in Suwanee (South Forsyth). This second victim and his wife confirmed their Target card had been fraudulently used. Investigators in Alpharetta and Forsyth County were contacted on the case. Milton Couple Victim of Tax Return Fraud

An Avensong Village Circle couple was the latest to fall victim of identity fraud, discovered by their CPA when he attempted to file their joint tax return. The couple came to Milton City Hall on May 29 to obtain a police report after their accountant told them he was unable to file their tax return because someone had already filed a tax return in their names. The couple had a copy of IRS Form 14039 Identity Theft Affidavit, and needed a police report. Police Say Employee Used Customer's Gift Card

A 20-year-old Kennesaw man shouldn't have used his employee discount when he allegedly used a customer's store gift card for himself. Alpharetta police were called to the Best Buy store on North Point Drive on May 11 on a report of theft by an employee. The area asset proection manager for the company met with the officer and the suspect at the store. According to the manager, the store employee had taken a gift card left by mistake by a customer on May 4. Six minutes later he checked the balance on the gift card, which was $1,842 at the time. The employee was accused of taken the gift card without notifying management, and later using it to buy items at another Best Buy store, using his employee number to get a discount. The employee …

Driver's License Requirements to Change July 1

To be fully compliant with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005, the State of Georgia is implementing new requirements when renewing or applying for a driver's license.

Beginning July 1, the Georgia Department of Driver Services will require additional documentation when applying for or renewing your driver's license or applying for an ID card. It's all part of a national security plan to improve the security of Georgia's DL and ID cards and to be fully compliant with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005. "We all had to go through this process when we first applied for a driver's license," said Susan Sports, communications director for the DDS. Providing the required documents will only be necessary this one time she said. The only visible difference from the current DL/ID is that a gold star will be printed on the top right corner of the Secure DL and IDs. The new licensing process also is aimed at provding …

Milton Man Given $12,000 Forged Check for Car

A Milton man is short one car and only has a forged check to show for it. The city resident told Milton police he sold a 2003 BMW 7451 to a man with an Arkansas identification on Sunday, April 1. He met the man in the Walmart parking lot because he was not comfortable meeting him at home. The suspect had contacted him on the previous two days. The suspect arrived at the Walmart in a dark blue Toyota 4-Runner with a female. After a test drive, they all drove back to the victim's home, where the suspect gave a $12,000 check to buy the car. He also signed a bill of sale and showed him his Arkansas identification. When the victim tried to deposit the check into his account, his bank refused it because it was forged. Charity Scam Leaves 11 Verizon Employees Jobless

Eleven Verizon employees were fired after allegedly admitting they registered as having completed 50 hours of charity work they never performed. The Verizon Foundation offers a $750 matching contribution for employees who volunteer time to charity. In this case, the 11 employees say they agreed to enter the time on behalf of a coworker's registered charity even though they didn't perform any volunteer hours, according to the March 26 incident report. Their coworker helped those unfamiliar with the program, even entering the hours herself on their work computers. Verizon never issued the $9,000 check to her charity that these hours would have generated if they were legitimate. The employee said to be at the center of the attempted fraud …

California Thief Steals Money from Milton Man's Account

A Milton man reported to police on Jan. 22 that someone in California took $3,400 out of his Chase bank account on Jan. 11. The victim said it appeared the person used blank forms from the bank to fill in his account information and made three withdrawals from the account. The victim told Milton police he has closed that account. Computer Missing from Milton Home The daughter of a Milton couple who had moved to California discovered on Jan. 24 that their home had been burglarized. The daughter hadn't lived there for more than a year and believed a computer and monitor were missing from the home. Her stepfather had returned to Atlanta and was contacted.
