Can't File Your Tax Return on Time by April 15? Request an Extension

The Internal Revenue Service says taxpayers who need more time to file don't need to panic.

Can't file your tax returns by the Monday, April 15 deadline? Extensions are available.  Those who haven't finished completing their returns can get an automatic six-month extension. The fastest and easiest way to get the extra time, the IRS says, is through this Free File link — use the free service to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension on Form 4868. Filing this form gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file a return and allows individuals to avoid a late-filing penalty. Still Mailing Tax Returns? Some Post Offices Stay Open Late April 15

Alpharetta locations close an hour later, but you have to drive to Atlanta to find a Post Office open until midnight.

Last-minute tax filers in Alpharetta and Milton on Monday, April 15 have an extra hour to drop off tax forms at the two Post Offices in Alpharetta. Is that not late enough for you? You can head over to the Roswell Postal Store on Alpharetta Highway, or to Boggs Road in Duluth, as both locations close at 7 p.m. But if you are running really late, the Atlanta Main Post Office on Crown Road will be open until midnight. Milton Couple Loses $30,000 Watch to Burglar

A Milton resident told police someone stole a $30,000 Rolex watch and a $1,600 Prada handbag from her home on Friday night, March 1. The Sunflower Way resident said she left her home at 6 p.m., and returned a little more than two hours later. The alarm system had started to malfunction on Feb. 24, and she has yet to get it repaired. Also, she reported locking herself out of her home two days later, which required a locksmith to open the door. She had the locks changed after that. Milton police found a rear window unsecured, but no one was found inside. Suspect Pries Open Registers, Steals Cash from Walmart

Milton police are investigating the theft of approximately $900 in cash from seven registers at Walmart on Feb. 21. According to an incident report, a suspect entered the store on Windward Parkway at 10:39 p.m. on Feb. 21 and left by 10:58 p.m. During the time he was in the store, video shows the suspect taking a jacket off a rack and placing it on a shopping cart he was pushing. He then visited seven different registers, using a hammer and screwdriver to pry open each one. After the registers were pried open, he took the cash from them and hid it under the jacket. When he left the store, he left the jacket in the shopping cart but took the cash. A Milton investigator managed to lift several prints from the cash registers. The Walmart loss…

Milton Woman Victimized Again, Losing $9,000 Tax Refund

A Hopewell Plantation Drive resident found that her identity had been stolen again, with a suspect getting her $9,000 tax refund. The local resident told Milton police on Jan. 4 that she learned identity fraud had been committed when she tried to file a tax return in September 2012 and was told one ad already been filed, with a tax refund issued on a prepaid card. Milton Business Owner's Tax Refund Stolen

A Canton man waited since January for the IRS to mail him his $8,966 tax refund to his Milton business address. But when it never showed up, he found out from the agency that his check was cashed in Athens with a false address listed with the fraudulent endorsement on the back of the check. The victim filed his complaint about a lost or stolen check with the IRS on May 25, and heard back from the federal agency on July 7. On July 8, he filed a report with the Milton Police Department. Office Store Helps Milton Man Discover Identity Fraud

A Milton man was contacted by Office Max of a pending Internet purchase of a computer that was scheduled to be shipped to a different address than his billing address, a red flag for fraud. The Oxford Meadow man said he on June 25 that hedid not use his card to buy the $909 computer. While checking into this fraud, he also discovered a second fraudulent purchase already made at a Bed, Bath and Beyond store of $869. The victim's credit card company credited him for the costs and is investigating the fraud. He told Milton police that he rarely uses that credit card, but he last used it to make a purchase at the Apple Store. Milton Couple Victim of Tax Return Fraud

An Avensong Village Circle couple was the latest to fall victim of identity fraud, discovered by their CPA when he attempted to file their joint tax return. The couple came to Milton City Hall on May 29 to obtain a police report after their accountant told them he was unable to file their tax return because someone had already filed a tax return in their names. The couple had a copy of IRS Form 14039 Identity Theft Affidavit, and needed a police report. Gas, Dinner Bought in Debit Card Fraud A Morris Road man called on Milton police two days after someone fraudulently used his debit card information for three purchases. Another Milton Taxpayer Victim of Fraud

A Soneley Way resident was the victim of forgery on tax refunds made out in her name. The woman told Milton police on May 25 that she called the IRS to ask when she would receive her tax return, but the federal agency told her it had been mailed in January and cashed on Feb. 16. When she called the Georgia Department of Revenue she heard the same story.
