Don't forget to tell us your pet's name and why you love it.
It's National Pet Day! A day devoted to people's love for their furry friends. In honor of today, Patch is inviting you to share photos of these special little souls. To get started meet Bart, my beagle, and a few of his friends who live with several Patch editors nearby. Obviously the photo isn't too recent, but it was taken here in Alpharetta. Bart was one of those rescue dogs who "was going to be put down when the weekend's over," according to the Bartow County Humane Society volunteer, who brought him and dozens of other dogs and cats to a Roswell pet store. Taking care of him keeps me a little bit more connected with real life after spending a day on the computer. Even when I've stayed away for far too long during the day, he's always…

Here is this week's Pet of the Week from the Atlanta Humane Society-Mansell Campus.
Come to the Atlanta Humane Society's Mansell Campus to meet our sweet Charlie, a beautiful, tan hound mix. Charlie is one year and eight months old and at 60 pounds would make a great running buddy. He is a friendly boy who is polite on a leash and good with basic manners. Charlie is very shy initially and will need an owner that understands this and is willing to give him time to warm up and adjust to his new family. He does LOVE other dogs and would make a great second dog. When he sees his dog friends, it helps him come out of his shell and become more confident. He is a very sweet boy and just needs someone willing to provide him with the love and time he needs to build up more confidence. Once he knows you, he will happily sit down …

The Animal Rescue Fair might not have drawn as big a crowd this year because of the weather, but more families brought pets with them to look for companions to their pets.
Barking could be heard coming from a place known better for horses today. The annual Animal Rescue Fair returned to the Wills Park Equestrian Center, with hundreds of rescue pets ready for a new home. The threat of rain reduced the crowd, though those who skipped htis year missed a great opportunity as previous years have been hot and humid. But Penne Crews, organizer of ARF, said the rain helped in one way. "The rain hurst us some. But where can people go with the weather? They can't play ball, they can't take their dogs, they can't take their kids outside. So we have seen more people here today, more families with their dogs. And looking for a new permanent companion for what they've already got," Crews said. Crews said 45 different …

Alpharetta woman finds her new pet on Facebook.
No one knew her real name so they called her Holly, and with just a handful of days to go till Christmas it seemed appropriate. Holly had been found wandering the streets and with no one to claim her she went to the only place that would let her in – the Humane Society in Macon. At any time of the year, Humane Societies across the country are bursting at the seams with animals that need homes. Everyone is busy at Christmas; the last thing on most people’s list is a stray dog, especially a dog like Holly. A full grown Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Holly belonged to a breed that is unfairly maligned and can be very hard to adopt out. The Humane Society in Macon is overwhelmed with dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Any stray that enters their …

Atlanta Humane Society plans open house for Saturday, Dec. 3, at its Mansell Road campus in Alpharetta.
The Mansell Campus of the Atlanta Humane Society holds a grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m., a chance for the public to check out the facility up close as the ribbon is cut for the animal shelter. More than 300 dogs and cats were arriving at the campus to await adoption. This is the first operational expansion for the Humane Society in its 138-year history. The 32,000-square-foot building no longer resembles a car dealership, which is what the building once housed. Features of what Deborah Ann Smith, director of community relations, called a state-of-the-art facility include: The shelter is at 1565 Mansell Rd, Alpharetta. Call the Atlanta Humane Society at 404-875-5331.

I got two kittens from the Atlanta Humane Society’s Mansell campus last April-we had lost our beloved boxer of 12 years a few months before---since my kids were heading off to college, I didn't want the responsibility of a new puppy-we got Harvey & Skylar at 8 weeks-litter mates-and they have been the biggest BLESSING we could've asked for! They make us smile everyday! They are perfectly healthy …   more ›
