Don't forget to tell us your pet's name and why you love it.
It's National Pet Day! A day devoted to people's love for their furry friends. In honor of today, Patch is inviting you to share photos of these special little souls. To get started meet Bart, my beagle, and a few of his friends who live with several Patch editors nearby. Obviously the photo isn't too recent, but it was taken here in Alpharetta. Bart was one of those rescue dogs who "was going to be put down when the weekend's over," according to the Bartow County Humane Society volunteer, who brought him and dozens of other dogs and cats to a Roswell pet store. Taking care of him keeps me a little bit more connected with real life after spending a day on the computer. Even when I've stayed away for far too long during the day, he's always…

Ted and Chance are this week's Pets of the Week from the Atlanta Humane Society-Mansell Campus.
Ted and Chance are a beautiful pair of bonded boy cats. They are both domestic shorthair mixes who just turned one year old. Ted is a gorgeous brown and black tabby with a white belly and Chance is mostly gray with little white markings on his belly and feet and bright green eyes. These boys have always lived together and need to go to a home as a pair. They are bonded and can often be caught cuddling and napping together. They are also very social and will quickly pop out to play when you enter their room. Both Ted and Chance like to play and be petted. They love attention and desire a home where they can live together and receive plenty of attention from their human family members. They have been vaccinated, micro-chipped, dewormed, …

Here is this week's Pet of the Week from the Atlanta Humane Society-Mansell Campus.
Come to the Atlanta Humane Society's Mansell Campus to meet our sweet Charlie, a beautiful, tan hound mix. Charlie is one year and eight months old and at 60 pounds would make a great running buddy. He is a friendly boy who is polite on a leash and good with basic manners. Charlie is very shy initially and will need an owner that understands this and is willing to give him time to warm up and adjust to his new family. He does LOVE other dogs and would make a great second dog. When he sees his dog friends, it helps him come out of his shell and become more confident. He is a very sweet boy and just needs someone willing to provide him with the love and time he needs to build up more confidence. Once he knows you, he will happily sit down …

This extremely playful cat enjoys snuggly beds and is ready to take home.
This week the Atlanta Humane Society wants to highlight our sweet, spunky Becca. Becca is a seven month old, domestic shorthair mix with the prettiest tabby coat. Her markings are very unique with a grey and orange tabby pattern alternating with solid white. Becca is very loving and enjoys snuggly beds and toys. She is extremely playful and would love to find a home committed to spending time playing with her. Becca can be a little shy initially but once she warms up she is spunky and cheerful. Becca would prefer to be the only cat in your home because she is not comfortable with other cats. She promises to bring plenty of love and playful enthusiasm into your home! This little lady has been living with the Atlanta Humane Society since …

Boots prefers any activity when you are near.
Boots is a beautiful lady with bright green eyes and a fluffy, medium length coat. Her black and white markings are unique and, true to her name, she sports four white booties! Boots came to the shelter after spending some time in a foster home where she raised four beautiful kittens. She was a very good mommy and now that all her babies have found loving homes Boots is ready for it to be her turn. Despite having been a mommy, Boots is still very young at only one year and nine months old. She is sweet, affectionate and loves being petted. Boots would be a great addition to any family with her loving nature and desire to both give and receive affection. After spending a little time with her, you can see her playful nature shine through. …

The Animal Rescue Fair might not have drawn as big a crowd this year because of the weather, but more families brought pets with them to look for companions to their pets.
Barking could be heard coming from a place known better for horses today. The annual Animal Rescue Fair returned to the Wills Park Equestrian Center, with hundreds of rescue pets ready for a new home. The threat of rain reduced the crowd, though those who skipped htis year missed a great opportunity as previous years have been hot and humid. But Penne Crews, organizer of ARF, said the rain helped in one way. "The rain hurst us some. But where can people go with the weather? They can't play ball, they can't take their dogs, they can't take their kids outside. So we have seen more people here today, more families with their dogs. And looking for a new permanent companion for what they've already got," Crews said. Crews said 45 different …

The Atlanta Humane Society's Mansell Campus has plenty of dogs and cats available for adoption.
Little dogs are all the rage these days, so Abby cannot understand why she can’t find her perfect family. Weighing only 18 pounds, this Dachshund-Chihuahua (Chiweenie) mix has plenty of energy to go around. Although she is small in stature she makes up for it with her big personality. She is a friendly girl with her favorite activities being rolling around on her back and frolicking in the play yards. Abby doesn’t let her little legs hold her back and is happy to run and play with her other doggie friends. At two years old, Abby came to the Atlanta Humane Society from another shelter and is ready to trade up from shelter living to a real home with a real family. Although she is little, she would love to have a fenced in yard or a family …

Alpharetta woman finds her new pet on Facebook.
No one knew her real name so they called her Holly, and with just a handful of days to go till Christmas it seemed appropriate. Holly had been found wandering the streets and with no one to claim her she went to the only place that would let her in – the Humane Society in Macon. At any time of the year, Humane Societies across the country are bursting at the seams with animals that need homes. Everyone is busy at Christmas; the last thing on most people’s list is a stray dog, especially a dog like Holly. A full grown Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Holly belonged to a breed that is unfairly maligned and can be very hard to adopt out. The Humane Society in Macon is overwhelmed with dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Any stray that enters their …

Atlanta Humane Society plans open house for Saturday, Dec. 3, at its Mansell Road campus in Alpharetta.
The Mansell Campus of the Atlanta Humane Society holds a grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m., a chance for the public to check out the facility up close as the ribbon is cut for the animal shelter. More than 300 dogs and cats were arriving at the campus to await adoption. This is the first operational expansion for the Humane Society in its 138-year history. The 32,000-square-foot building no longer resembles a car dealership, which is what the building once housed. Features of what Deborah Ann Smith, director of community relations, called a state-of-the-art facility include: The shelter is at 1565 Mansell Rd, Alpharetta.
