Milton added acres to Bell Memorial Park, and now the public has three chances in late April and June to give input on the proposed expansion project. The first will be held at Bell Memorial Park as part of the Hopewell Youth Association's HYA Day, the kick-off of the spring tournament, according to a news release from the city. The second and third will be held at Milton's City Hall. All three will be moderated by Milton's plan partner, Foresite Group. Meeting schedule: Additionally, staff has contacted representatives from 11 stakeholder groups representing sports leagues, trails enthusiasts, equestrians, local neighborhoods and more to conduct focused research. Milton closed on the last 14 acres of land adjacent to Bell Memorial Park on Monday night, fulfilling the promise outlined in the Parks Master Plan to expand the asset. The city paid $1.287 million for the land, according to a news release from Milton Communications Manager Jason Wright. The 14 acres of land more than doubles the park's size. How the land will be used will be determined through community involvement and a series of public meetings to ensure the park's design meets local expectations, the city's release said. "Expansion of our existing parks and recreation resources is a priority for this council and city staff," said City Manager Chris Lagerbloom. "We plan to move forward immediately and bring our residents what they …

City Council approved spending $345,000 on almost 4 acres of land next to the existing park, home to the Hopewell Youth Association baseball league.
Before Milton City Council even had a chance to approve the purchase of 3.82 acres of land next to Bell Memorial Park, the biggest supporters of that park were thanking the city. Scott Stachowski, president of the Hopewell Youth Association, spoke at the start of the Monday night council meeting to offer his organization's thanks. (Watch accompanying video.) He couldn't stay to watch the $345,000 purchase be approved because his son's baseball team had a practice he needed to attend. Mayor Joe Lockwood said after the meeting that the additional park land could allow expansion of the existing facilities. First, however, the city will check the property for problems, such as having been a site where George Washginton once slept, containing …

He sounds like a great addition.... for both cities. With all the assets to be harnessed between Milton and Alpharetta, he sounds like a guy that can and will build consensus so all will benefit. It is crazy to separate the parks and programs merely because of city borders. They are so intertwined we should be able to work out a mutually beneficial financial arrangement.   more ›
