Alpharetta Cuts the Ribbon on Haynes Bridge Road Work

The realignment project moved the northernmost section of the major traffic artery east around the future City Center site, adding a roundabout midway at the entrance to Publix.

The wait for the reopening of the top end of Haynes Bridge Road ended over the weekend, and drivers are beginning to use the realigned route between Old Milton Parkway and Academy Street in downtown Alpharetta. "We're excited this is the first physical milestone that you can see that we've been working toward our downtown. We've been working on it for a long time and talking about it for a long time," said Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle. He said the next visible action to be seen will be groundbreaking on the City Center site early in the second quarter of the new year. On the southern end the road remains five lanes wide – one northbound and four southbound, with two left turn lanes sending traffic east on Old Milton. The intersection …

Haynes Bridge Road Reopens Saturday in Downtown Alpharetta

The closure was needed to finish construction by the end of the year, which was promised to Fulton County so a new Alpharetta Library branch could be built on the City Center property.

The city of Alpharetta announced that the relocated section of Haynes Bridge Road between Old Milton Parkway and Academy Street will reopen on Saturday, Dec. 29. The public can start driving on the new section beginning at noon. Look for a bunch of city officials, contractors, politicians and media people to be out there on Monday morning for an official ribbon cutting. After months of construction, it will once again be easier to navigate through downtown Alpharetta – and get to the downtown Publix. Relocating the top end of Haynes Bridge to the east allows the city to combine its downtown properties to build its City Center. “The opening of this section of Haynes Bridge Road marks the first major milestone in the development of our City …

Haynes Bridge Road Detour Began Today

The realignment of the northern section of the road around the downtown City Center property would be delayed for months without the closure.

Did you remember that Haynes Bridge Road was being closed today at its northern end near Publix in downtown Alpharetta? Or did you get caught up in a sudden detour that sent you out of your way? The north end of Haynes Bridge Road closed starting today, Oct. 11 to give contractors more time to complete the realignment of the road around the City Center project by year's end. But you can still access the Publix grocery store and Chase Bank branch from a short stretch of Haynes Bridge north of Old Milton Parkway. The city is suggesting motorists use Westside Parkway as a detour. Otherwise, you'll have to use GA 9 (Main Street in Alpharetta) to get around the road closure caused by construction. Delays caused by utility companies pulling …

While all through traffic will be prohibited while the closure is in effect, the following accommodations have been made to allow public access to destinations within the closure area: A soft closure will be in effect for southbound Haynes Bridge between Academy Street and the truck/delivery entrance to Publix. This will allow access to Publix’s loading dock as well as to Jones Avenue and the …   more ›

Alpharetta Will Close Part of Haynes Bridge Road Next Week

The road project to reroute Haynes Bridge Road to the east of the City Center site is four months behind schedule, and closing the road will increase construction hours.

A week from Thursday the top end of Haynes Bridge Road will be closed so the rerouting of the road can be completed by the end of the year. Hurricanes and tropical storms pulled Georgia Power, AT&T and other utility company crews away from Georgia, creating a major delay in the road project, according to Pete Sewczwicz, director of the Department of Engineering and Public Works. "We are about four months behind schedule," he said. Sewczwicz said city staff has been working with CW Matthews to find a way to speed the process up. He presented the solution to City Council at their meeting Monday night, Oct. 1. "That is to close Haynes Bridge Road between Old Milton and Academy Street until Dec. 31," he said. "This was news to me today," Mayor…

Brooke Street Park Exists in Name

Alpharetta residents have a new park, but until the City Center is built, they probably won't be able to use it, as it will continue to be a construction site.

Brooke Street Park was intended to be a passive park from the start, but today it isn't much more than a couple of signs, some trees, squirrels and erosion control fences. The park is intended to be larger than just the section bounded by the existing Haynes Bridge Road and Brooke Street. But it got smaller before it will get bigger – the new route for Haynes Bridge Road uses property to the west of Brooke Street's "top half" rather than displacing more homes. What do you want to see for Brooke Street Park? Here are a few ideas, why don't you weigh in on yours? Haynes Bridge Road's New Route Should Open in March

Roundabout construction expected to start in October 2012.

Progress is being made on the project that moves Haynes Bridge Road to curve around the Alpharetta City Center's eastern side, according to Pete Sewczwicz, the city's director of Engineering and Public Works. "The original layout like it's been approved in November 2011 is still in the works, is still being taken care of," he said. He said the contractor is scheduled to start construction of the roundabout near the end of October. "Basically, being done with everything, we are looking at March," Sewczwicz said. That includes all of the punch lists, site stabilization, cleaning up erosion controls and the back fill along the curb and gutter. What has held up obvious progress has been utilities. Fulton County's Water Department had been …

Alpharetta Closing GA 400 Lanes, Ramp Today

The Department of Public Safety's traffic investigators will recreate last week's fatal accident to determine its cause.

Expect big delays on GA 400 northbound near Haynes Bridge Road today, April 19 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. as Alpharetta traffic crash investigators try to determine exactly what happened in an April 11 fatal accident. The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety closing two northbound lanes of GA 400 from the Haynes Bridge entrance ramp onto GA 400, extending north toward Old Milton Parkway, according to George Gordon, spokesman for the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. More than the GA 400 lanes will be closed. As the accident began on the northbound entrance ramp from Haynes Bridge, investigators will close the ramp also. "All motorists will experience traffic volume delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes of travel," Gordon said…

Cumming Man Victim in Fatal Accident in Alpharetta

The accident caused police to close lanes for several hours on GA 400 and the northbound entrance ramp from Haynes Bridge Road.

UPDATED 10:30 a.m., April 12: A 67-year-old Cumming man has been identified as the victim in a fatal accident in Alpharetta on the morning of April 11. Edward Kivlin, 67, of Cumming, was dead at the scene, according to Alpharetta Department of Public Safety spokesman George Gordon. The initial investigation by the traffic enforcement unit indicates a red Honda Civic left its northbound lane on the entrance ramp to GA 400 from Haynes Bridge Road. It struck a maroon Nissan Pathfinder traveling in an adjacent lane. Both drivers lost control as their vehicles slid into a grass gore area off the roadway next to the Haynes Bridge northbound ramp area. The Nissan Pathfinder continued out of control sliding across the Haynes Bridge northbound ramp…

Haynes Bridge Road Rerouting Costs Soar, But Alpharetta Won't Pay

The city is entering into an agreement with Fulton County for it to pay for its water transmission line upgrades.

The cost of moving Haynes Bridge Road to make way for the Alpharetta City Center just grew by more than $1.3 million, but the city won't be footing the bill for the extra work. City Council is expected to approve an agreement tonight, Feb. 20, at its meeting at City Hall, with Fulton County to do the work. The city had a similar agreement with the county on water pipes under the roadway improvements constructed as part of the Kimball Bridge Road – Waters Road intersection project. Fulton County is in the midst of a project to upgrade a water transmission line between the Jones Bridge/Buice Road intersection and Mayfield Road. A memorandum of understanding between the city and county is on the Ctiy Council agenda tonight, for the …

Alpharetta Approves Spending $2.9 Million to Shift Road for City Center

Haynes Bridge Road's final stretch will shift east to create a larger development site for a new City Hall, library branch, park, town green and parking.

Alpharetta City Council approved a $2.29 million contract with C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. for the realignment of Haynes Bridge Road. The council took the vote past 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, having been in council chambers at City Hall since a reception for outgoing council members at 6:30 p.m. the day before. This project is a key step in the City Center project, as it will allow the city to develop its downtown property as one connected site without being split by a road. The realignment includes, but is not limited to: The new Alpharetta branch of the Atlanta-Fulton County Library System is planned to be built just north of the roundabout on Haynes Bridge, putting it in the middle of Haynes Bridge if it wasn't realigned. Pete …
