Cool Sipping in Hot August

Chill out at a German bierfest, brewery tour, tomato festival, Riesling tastings and more during this hot, muggy month.

Ugh.Those soggy, hot August Dog Days are upon us. Normally, this  is the time  that “get-up-and-go” activities  fall off to almost nothing except for school starting and temperatures soaring up to the high 90s. Not so for this August. No one needs sunscreen in an air conditioned room. Opportunities abound to sip and savor your favorite beers, wines, and spirits. There is so much to do and so little time! From the South’s largest German Bierfest to the promise (maybe) of a La Tomatina festival tomato fight, the list goes on and on and on. Folks bus to VIP brewery tours; executives from Italy, Oregon, California and Spain are visiting offering wines. There are celebrations for delicious craft beers and a new growler shop opening -- even wine…

Milton OKs Growler Sales of Beer

Retail stores with a beer and wine license can sell the beer poured from a keg, and customers can try small samples to taste.

Milton City Council adopted an amendment to the city's alcohol ordinance that clears the way for growler sales. Mostly because of state laws and regulations Milton's ordinance on growlers is nearly the same as Alpharetta's. City Council approved the amendment at their meeting in City Hall on July 2. "Somebody who just wants to taste a beer and see if they like it, they can do that," said Milton Finance Manager Stacey Inglis. Growlers are glass containers filled with beer from a keg, and typically are specialty beers that aren't sold by the bottle, she said. The containers–usually 64 ounces–are sold in the store. Once filled and taken home, they can be brought back to the store to purchase more beer. The growler is sanitized in the store …

July Overflowing With Wine, Beer Tastings

Red, White & Blue festivities lead off month filled with barbecue, beer, wine and more. Oh, and there's a local running of the bulls.

Starting with the July 4th Weekend’s Red, White & Blue Pub Crawl and two holiday parties featuring barbecue, beer, bluegrass and wine, this month's calendar of wine, beer, and spirits tastings offer opportunities to sample a little of everything. Brew Master Bobo, a Catholic monk from Belgium, comes to town. There's a Sour Beer festival and a Christmas in July party as well as an “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” and the “Wine Wars." Also planned are a beer dinner in an authentic English-style cask ale pub along with three super wine tastings set for July 21, July 26 and July 27. Foodies everywhere are licking their lips for the start of Downtown Atlanta Restaurant Week. There is a local celebration of the Spanish running of the bulls.  July…

Milton City Council Vote Intended to Retain Crabapple's Character

The form-based code zoning puts form over function. Council also decides if it wants to put beer "growlers" on a future agenda.

Alpharetta already has two "growler" stores announced, and the sale of draft beer in a sealed, big glass jug will become a regular occurrence. On Monday at 6 p.m., June 18, Milton City Council will decide if it wants to put the issue on a future agenda for possible adoption. Growlers can't be sold in restaurants. Stores selling growlers must have a package beer sales license. A recently adopted state law allows cities to amend their alcoholic beverages ordinance to authorize growler sales, making  it a city-by-city decision. (Counties make the call for their unincorporated areas.) Monday's vote at Milton City Hall will not be about the ordinance. On first presentation, City Council decides if it will hear the proposal at a future meeting, …

Here is another good description of Form-based code vs. the Euclidean zoning of which most of us are most familiar. Indeed, form-based zoning tends to favor the urban form and higher densities. http://www.miami21.org/TypesofZoningCodes.asp   more ›

Blind Murphy Craft Beer Market's Mission is Charity

The store opening in downtown Alpharetta may be the first to sell growlers in the city.

Blind Murphy Craft Beer Market opens later this month with a mission. "Our tag line is 'Drink good beer, do good work,'" said David Sheets, owner of what might be the first store to sell growlers in Alpharetta, though that is just part of what will be sold. Bottled craft beers, home brewing and "man cave" supplies also will be on tap (pun most certainly intended). "One hundred percent of our net proceeds, after payroll and taxes, will be going to missionaries and charities," he said. "If what you do benefits others, then when you come in here we will reward that. That's really the true purpose of opening Blind Murphy Craft Beer Market," Sheets said. The store will open in the Kell Building in downtown Alpharetta as early as June 16, if …

Alpharettans May Get to Take Growlers of Beer Home

If an amendment to the alcohol ordinance passes, a beer license will be required to sell growlers, but you can't sell liquor in the same store.

The popularity of craft beers has expanded to the opening of growler stores, where customers can get 64-ounce glass bottles filled from the tap and sealed up to take home. Alpharetta looks to be joining communities such as Duluth, Athens and Avondale. On April 10 at City Hall, City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance allowing the sale of growlers, traditionally glass bottles. You won't be able to buy or fill up your growlers at restaurants or liquor stores. State law prohibits that. "You cannot sell growlers at establishments licensed to sell distilled spirits or liquor," City Attorney Sam Thomas said. Growler stores will be able to provide samples, but not enough that anybody could fall under the influence. As the ordinanace …
