The public charter school's own board can request a hearing to be held Dec. 18, but the ultimate decision on the charter rests with the Georgia Department of Education.
CORRECTION: Through an editor's error, the original headline on this article named the school incorrectly. Fulton Science Academy High is the charter school affected, as the story stated. The Fulton County Board of Education today, Dec. 11, approved a recommendation to start the process to close Fulton Science Academy High School at the end of the school year. Superintendent Robert Avossa first made the recommendation to terminate the school's charter at a school board work session on Dec. 4. Avossa based his recommendation on what staff reports call "a history of insufficient governance capacity and poor decision-making on the part of the school’s governance board." An independent audit released to the school board on Dec. 4 was said to …

The charter middle school's board of governors took issue with the school system's report.
CORRECTION: A reference to Fulton County on immigration services was reversed, and has been corrected in the copy below. Fulton Science Academy Middle School effectively won't exist after Saturday, when its charter with the Fulton County School System expires. But its board of governors responded today, June 28, to an audit report's findings with its own investigative report. GlassRatner, a national specialty advisory services firm headquartered in Atlanta, performed an investigation into the audit report written by IAG Forensics, and it took issue with much of the report. "Many of the alleged findings in the IAG Report are flawed, unsupported and inaccurate and the IAG Report failed to make factual findings based on actual data and …

Charter Division Director says state can only consider the petition Futon County School Board rejected.
The state Department of Education has told Fulton Science Academy Middle School it has until Jan. 19 to file its request to become a state charter school. The school is at the back of the line, behind approximately 20 other schools seeking charters, renewals or conversions, said Louis Erste, director of the Charter School Division. The deadline was supposed to be Nov. 1 for the state petition, but Fulton County School and the state agreed to several extensions in the Fulton system. It usually takes six months to process and consider the charter request. Erste said state law only lets the Department of Education consider the petition that the local school board denied. In this case, it would be a request that had two sticking points: a 10-…

A Fulton Science Academy family discusses their options after the Fulton School Board's action.
Cynthia and Doug Lucas first decided to put their daughter, Christina, in Fulton Science Academy Middle School because they were looking for structure. “We wanted a more balanced education for her,” Cynthia said. “We looked at private schools, public and charters and the charters had that structure we were looking for.” Christina, 14, was the first of their three daughters to attend FSA. Faith Lucas, 12, is currently enrolled in Fulton Science Academy and the youngest, Sarah, 10, attends the elementary school, Fulton Sunshine Academy. When the Lucas’ heard that the school they had been involved in for the last four years might be shut down, they felt concern for the future of their children’s education. “I was concerned in the sense that—…

Legislators from Alpharetta and Roswell promise legislation dealing with charter renewals after Fulton Science Academy Middle School's application was voted down.
Reps. Chuck Martin and Harry Geisinger, plus Sen. John Albers, took part in a press conference at Fulton Science Academy Middle School on Dec. 22, two days after the school's charter renewal was denied. The lawmakers said the Fulton County School Board needs to do the right thing. They proposed legislation that would require school boards to justify why a school's charter renewal shouldn't be automatic if it was meeting its financial and performance requirements. A few hours after the press conference, the school system dismissed the suggestion that the case be revisited immediately, and said the charter school's latest application revision would be heard in the next cycle. That heads the school toward closing next year.
