Alpharetta's former Community Development director will start in a similar position with the new Gwinnett County city on Aug. 27.
Five weeks after resigning from a position as Alpharetta's Community Development director, Diana Wheeler has taken a similar position with Peachtree Corners. Gwinnett County's newest city named Wheeler as its Community Development director, effective Aug. 27, according to a news release from the city. Diana Wheeler said she left a well-established city behind after her 18 years of work.
Diana Wheeler said in an email interview today that she left the Alpharetta Community Development Department because with the city so well established, "so, after 18 years, it was time for me to move on to new opportunities and challenges." She has no immediate plans except to help her son, John, get his first book published. He is working on getting a literary agent and could use her help with administrative support. Wheeler tendered her resignation July 13. Alpharetta City Council is scheduled to accept that resignation at a meeting at 7:30 p.m. today, July 16, at Alpharetta City Hall. The 18-year veteran of the city department quit her post effective today, July 13.
UPDATED 6:40 p.m., with a third City Council member's comments, plus contacts for the public in Community Development. Alpharetta's Community Development Director has resigned as of today, July 13. Diana Wheeler, who had been the department's director for the past 18 years, turned in her resignation effective July 13, confirmed Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard. He said the city does not discuss personnel matters. Drinkard said the Mayor and City Administrator Bob Regus will have to sit down with City Council and plot out the department's future.
