UPDATE: The section of Academy Street closed because of a gas main break has reopened. A section of Academy Street is closed between Westside Parkway and GA 9 because of a gas main break, according to Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard. Find alternate routes, such as Old Milton Parkway, or go north and use Windward Parkway. Construction crews struck the line while working on a road construction project. Utility crews have been notified and are in route. There is currently no estimate as to when the road section may reopen.

The road project to reroute Haynes Bridge Road to the east of the City Center site is four months behind schedule, and closing the road will increase construction hours.
A week from Thursday the top end of Haynes Bridge Road will be closed so the rerouting of the road can be completed by the end of the year. Hurricanes and tropical storms pulled Georgia Power, AT&T and other utility company crews away from Georgia, creating a major delay in the road project, according to Pete Sewczwicz, director of the Department of Engineering and Public Works. "We are about four months behind schedule," he said. Sewczwicz said city staff has been working with CW Matthews to find a way to speed the process up. He presented the solution to City Council at their meeting Monday night, Oct. 1. "That is to close Haynes Bridge Road between Old Milton and Academy Street until Dec. 31," he said. "This was news to me today," Mayor…

Roundabout construction expected to start in October 2012.
Progress is being made on the project that moves Haynes Bridge Road to curve around the Alpharetta City Center's eastern side, according to Pete Sewczwicz, the city's director of Engineering and Public Works. "The original layout like it's been approved in November 2011 is still in the works, is still being taken care of," he said. He said the contractor is scheduled to start construction of the roundabout near the end of October. "Basically, being done with everything, we are looking at March," Sewczwicz said. That includes all of the punch lists, site stabilization, cleaning up erosion controls and the back fill along the curb and gutter. What has held up obvious progress has been utilities. Fulton County's Water Department had been …

Taste of Alpharetta may only run from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. on Thursday, but you'd better not leave your car parked tonight on any of the streets it will use. If you do, prepare to pay a towing company. Not only will the sections of roads used for the event be closed. The "approaches" to those roads from three sides will be closed to through traffic, with only resident and business access allowed. So go move your car right now to make sure you don't have to pay a towing fee. And on Thursday, expect to use Old Milton Parkway to get to Wills Road, which leads you to Mid Broadwell if that's where you are headed. Residents of the Garden District will need to head over to North Main to travel south past downtown. Although if they are headed for …

Bridge construction and paving will have the old and new bridges closed tonight through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22.
Don't forget that the Georgia Department of Transportation will close the bridge over Big Creek on Kimball Bridge Road starting at 9 p.m. tonight, Friday. the 19th. GDOT crews need to pave the approaches to the bridge. For the entire weekend Kimball Bridge Road will no longer be a connecting road between Old Milton and North Point parkways, though all residents should be able reach their homes. Pedestrians and bicyclists heading for the Big Creek Greenway at Rock Mill Park just west of the bridge should watch out for frustrated motorists using the park parking lot as a spot to turn around. When the bridge reopens by 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, motorist will be driving across the new bridge.

If you planned to drive through downtown Alpharetta on Saturday, forget it. Several downtown Alpharetta roads will be closed on Saturday morning, Aug. 6, for the Old Soldier's Day Race and Parade, so motorists need to take alternate routes at that time. You've probably seen the traffic advisory signs, but in case you missed them or were paying attention to traffic instead–and that's a good idea–here's the information you'll need to get through the city. Since many residents walk to the parade route, or park outside of the immediate area and walk in, consider any street near downtown a danger zone with pedestrians popping into traffic at any time. The city expects sections of Old Milton Parkway, GA 9 (Main Street), Milton Avenue and Old …

Alpharetta's first roundabout is open, creating the new intersection of Douglas Road and Southlake Drive, but a contruction detour continues nearby. The roundabout is substantially complete and is open, said Assistant City Adminstrator James Drinkard in a news release on Friday, July 29. Final landscaping and additional aesthetics will be installed in and around the roundabout and bridge replacement in the late fall. Drinkard said though the roundabout is open, the bridge over Caney Creek on Douglas Road is still under construction. Individuals are not permitted to cross the bridge. Detour signs will remain, instructing motorists to utilize Jones Bridge Road and McGinnis Ferry Road to access various streets north of Caney Creek. Rules of …

If you normally drive down Doulgas Road in Alpharetta, you'd better change your plans starting next Monday. The city of Alpharetta will close a portion of the road beginning June 6 due to a road construction project. The affected area is between Leeward Run Drive and Oak Tree Hollow. South Lake Drive and Leeward Walk Circle will also be closed at their intersections with Douglas Road, according to a news release from the city. The purpose of these closures is to permit construction associated with the intersection and pedestrian improvements at Douglas Road and South Lake Drive and the replacement of the bridge across Caney Creek. While the road closures are in effect, a detour route will be posted utilizing Jones Bridge Road and McGinnis…
