Normally, this is the time that “get-up-and-go” activities fall off to almost nothing except for school starting and temperatures soaring up to the high 90s. Not so for this August. No one needs sunscreen in an air conditioned room. Opportunities abound to sip and savor your favorite beers, wines, and spirits. There is so much to do and so little time! From the South’s largest German Bierfest to the promise (maybe) of a La Tomatina festival tomato fight, the list goes on and on and on. Folks bus to VIP brewery tours; executives from Italy, Oregon, California and Spain are visiting offering wines. If an amendment to the alcohol ordinance passes, a beer license will be required to sell growlers, but you can't sell liquor in the same store.
The popularity of craft beers has expanded to the opening of growler stores, where customers can get 64-ounce glass bottles filled from the tap and sealed up to take home. Alpharetta looks to be joining communities such as Duluth, Athens and Avondale. On April 10 at City Hall, City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance allowing the sale of growlers, traditionally glass bottles. You won't be able to buy or fill up your growlers at restaurants or liquor stores. State law prohibits that. "You cannot sell growlers at establishments licensed to sell distilled spirits or liquor," City Attorney Sam Thomas said.
