Pope's Resignation Draws Mixed Reaction in Alpharetta, Milton

His resignation will go into effect on Feb. 28, and a successor should be named by Easter.

Pope Benedict XVI announced today that he is resigning, effective Feb. 28. Archdiocese of Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. today at 2401 Lake Park Drive, in Smyrna, to address questions and concerns. Local churches, including Snellville's St. Oliver Plunkett, are not authorized to comment on the situation.  "It’s very new," said Meaghan Schroeder, assistant communications director for the Archdiocese of Atlanta. "Everyone's just trying to digest it all." Local residents commenting on Alpharetta-Milton Patch's Facebook page had a mix of reactions, from shocked to disinterest. "I think nobody really cares. Funeral for Retired Atlanta Archbishop Is Thursday at Christ the King

John Donoghue dies at age 83

The funeral Mass for Atlanta Archbishop-emeritus John Francis Donoghue will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Buckhead. Archbishop Donoghue, 83, the fifth archbishop of the Atlanta Archdiocese, died Friday night, the Atlanta archdiocese said. The archdiocese gave no information about the cause or circumstances of his death, but The Atlanta Journal-Constitution cited a report that he had grown increasingly weak in recent months. The AJC said that he regularly prayed at the cathedral at 2 a.m. His body will lie in state at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 353 Peachtree St. from 10 a.m  Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday. The AJC and casual reporter Louis Mayeux would have it that a Catholic archbishop issuing directives in keeping with his office is controversial. I suppose there is a grain of truth to that sentiment, in the sense that a Catholic cleric is often a sign of contradiction to injustice.
