Alpharetta, Milton Students Go Back to School

Today, Aug. 13, was the first day of classes in Fulton County.

Fulton County Schools started classes this morning, taking buses, riding with mom or dad – or even driving themselves – to get to school. Expect morning rush hours to be a bit more crowded as carpools to school join buses in the early morning hours. Daycare and after school programs will be busier, too. Summit Hill Elementary School's media specialist shared a few photos, as did Alpharetta Elementary, which welcomed 624 students on the first day of school. View the photos submitted by several local schools. Parents, teachers and students: Add your own photos from the first day of school to this article by clicking on the "Upload Photos and Videos" button underneath the photos here. And yes, you can add video, too.

Alpharetta Elementary Students Buddy Up With Special Peers

PE Buddy Program a Success at Alpharetta Elementary

While most children shy away from children with special needs, the students at Alpharetta Elementary go to extraordinary lengths to be their "buddies."  All throughout the school day at Alpharetta Elementary, students buddy up with their peers with special needs in lunch; in their classrooms; out at recess and in physical education. In the gym, students volunteer to work with their special friends and earn a "PE Buddy of the Month" T-shirt. It is a heartwarming experience to see everyone work together and one that is positive for both groups.
