Is a Visit to Jurassic Park in 3D Worth the Trip?

"The frights still work," says one critic, while another says "the 3D provides the definitive version of classic film."

EDITOR'S NOTE: "Jurassic Park 3D" is showing at AMC Mansell Crossing 14 in Alpharetta in this limited engagement.  From the film's official website: With his remastering of the epic into a state-of-the-art 3D format, Spielberg introduces the three-time Academy Award-winning blockbuster to a new generation of moviegoers and allows longtime fans to experience the world he envisioned in a way that was unimaginable during the film’s original release. Starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Attenborough, the film based on the novel by Michael Crichton is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Gerald R. Molen. The film's premise, courtesy of IMDb:  During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown…

Movie Review: 'Wreck-It Ralph' is Retro-Pop Family Fun

The bad guy in an old video game is about to become the good guy in a new movie. It's a wreck the whole family should enjoy.

The bad guy in a low-resolution '80s video game is a reluctant villain who tears down buildings with his sledgehammer fists. He's ready for a change in today's high-resolution world in "Wreck-It Ralph," in 3D. To break out of his bad-guy image Ralph travels to grand game central, where there is access to every video game in the world. If he can win a few levels, who knows, he may become that good guy he has always wanted to be. The clever writing and character development is met with a solid voice-over cast which includes John C. Reilly as Ralph, Sarah Silverman as the voice of Vanellope and Jane Lynch as Sgt. Calhoun. There are dozens of retro games for the grown-ups and a solid storyline for the kids. As in the tradition of "Toy Story," …

'Resident Evil: Retribution' a Non-Stop Zombie Bloodbath

The "Resident Evil" franchise is back with a fifth movie. There is plenty of action, plenty of zombies, all in 3D. Simply put, it may be the best one yet.

Milla Jovovich jumps back into her role as Alice. This time, she is trapped inside a compound making this a great rescue mission, as she tries to escape the land of zombies in "Resident Evil: Retribution." Fans of the franchise will love the resurrection of some familiar actors from other Resident Evil movies, along with some new ones. This film feels more like a video game than previous films because Alice has to go through different levels to escape. The acting, overall, is not that great. But, really, fans of the franchise aren't there for the acting. It's all about the action, and there is plenty of it. The Moscow scene involving a Rolls-Royce car chase and Russian zombies was perhaps my favorite. But I digress. Die-hard fans of the …

'The Pirates! Band of Misfits' A Treasure Trove of Fun

A ship full of bumbling Pirates take us on a 3D Claymation animation trip worth the voyage.

A below average pirate captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) seeks to win the elusive "Pirate of the Year" award, but faces some strong competition in "The Pirates! Band of Misfits." From the folks who brought us Wallace and Gromit, the story is feather-light but strong enough to introduce the characters and establish their conflicts, which are pretty predictable. It's more of a comedy than an adventure, appealing to both children and adults. Such a film should be a crowd pleaser at the box office. Audiences love pirate movies. Toss in some quirky characters – like a twisted Queen Victoria and Charles Darwin – and you have an evolutionary success. The film is an enjoyable 90 minutes. The voice casting was mostly on merit and not on stunt casting…

'John Carter' a Sci-Fi Bonanza

A Civil War veteran gets roped into an intergalactic war that he wants no part of. This film is part 'Avatar,' 'Star Wars,' with a whole lot of 'Cowboys and Aliens.'

Taylor Kitsch (from "Friday Night Lights") plays a Civil War veteran who finds himself on Mars caught up in all sorts of interplanetary fighting in "John Carter." The original story was penned by Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 years ago. Now it's a 3D epic, from the folks who brought us "WALL-E," and is bigger than life. John Carter is a small man compared to the 12-foot-tall, four-armed creatures around him, but he does have his own superpowers while on the Martian planet. If you haven't read the book, there is a lot to keep track of here. Carter wants to go home – An alien species wants him to marry their queen. Another alien is smitten with him. Another group wants him to save their people. Toss in some shape shifters and, well, it's kind of …

'Journey 2 : The Mysterious Island' Is a Fun-Filled Family Adventure Movie

A good old-fashioned action adventure film opens in theaters this week, and it should be a hit with the entire family.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson joins a supporting cast of characters in a sequel to the 2008 "Journey to the Center of the Earth" film. This one, once again,  has more action and adventure than you can handle in 3D in, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." Josh Hutcherson reprises his role as Sean. With Brendan Fraser out in this film Dwayne Johnson fills the void as Hank, the stepdad. Luis Guzman plays a helicopter pilot named Gabato and his feisty daughter, Kailani, is played by Vanessa Hudgens. Michael Caine chimes in as the grandfather in a film that is filled with laughs and slapstick throughout. The premise of the film is pretty basic. Young Sean intercepts a distress signal in the South Pacific. They head there where they encounter a …

'Puss in Boots' Is a Purr-fect Family Flick

That swashbuckling cat from the Shrek movies brings his suave swagger to a 3D animated film the entire family should enjoy.

This "Shrek" spin-off is actually a prequel that tells the story of Puss in Boots, a adventurous kitty voiced with great charisma by Antonio Banderas. Our favorite cat teams up with the lively Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) on a dangerous search for Jack and Jill's "magic beans."  They get help in their quest from Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) as they climb the beanstalk to a castle in the clouds to nab the golden goose in order to repay their debts back home. There are more cat jokes and fairy-tale references in this story than I have time to mention. The Puss in Boots character was one of the best parts of the "Shrek" movies, but a little of him goes a long way. The feline has some trouble maintaining his shtick for 90 minutes, so the …
