Obituary: Agnes Diane Hughes

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 25, at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors.

Agnes Diane Hughes, 69, of Alpharetta, died Thursday, May 23, according to her Northside Chapel Funeral Directors obituary. Hughes is survived by her husband of over 25 years, Charles E. Hughes, of Alpharetta; sons, Tim Taylor, of Marietta, and David Taylor, of Cumming; daughter, Missy Mize, of Gainesville; sisters, Martha Cronan, of Alpharetta, and Marlene Lindsey, of Woodstock. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 25 at 2 p.m. at at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors. Interment will follow at Roswell's Green Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening, May 24 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Obituary: J. Paul Copeland

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 20 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Roswell United Methodist Church.

J. Paul Copeland, 79, of Alpharetta, died May 17, 2013 at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta, according to his obituary on Northside Chapel Funeral Directors and Crematory. Born in Arab, AL to Paul Haden and Jimmie Bodine Copeland, Copeland was an educator for 30 years with the DeKalb County School System. He received his graduate degree from Auburn University, his master’s degree from Vanderbilt University and his specialist degree from the University of Georgia. He served as a teacher, principal, and retired as assistant superintendent of human resources. He later founded Copeland and Associates Insurance. Obituary: Justin David Dixon

Dixon's family will receive friends at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors on Friday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Milton High School graduate Justin David Dixon, 31, of Canton, died May 13. Born in Miami to David Lee and Pierrette Gingras Dixon, he was also a graduate of  the Atlanta Culinary Art Institute. A U.S. Army veteran, he served two tours in Iraq. Along with his parents, he is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Michelle and Matthew Haney and their children, Conner and Brennen, asa well as his grandmother, Willa Davenport. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. at Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church. Sondra Renee Wood, 36, of Alpharetta, passed away Friday, May 03, 2013 at Northside Hospital-Forsyth with her family by her side. She was 1994 graduate of Franklin County High School. She was a former employee of Norris Drugs, in Lavonia, GA, and was a manager at Lakeside Pharmacy in Cumming. She is survived by her husband, Jeffrey Wood of Alpharetta; parents, Barney Chitwood of Cannon, GA and Susan McBride of Lavonia, GA; grandparents, Hubert and Lorene Perkins of Lavonia, GA. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 5, at 5 p.m. at the McDonald and Son Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3 p.m. until service time. Local NBA Pioneer, a Milton Resident, Dies Over the Weekend

Roswell's Northside Chapel Funeral Directors and Crematory is handling funeral arrangements for Marty Blake.

Marty Blake, 86, of Milton, died on April 7, according to his Northside Chapel Funeral Directors and Crematory obituary. Blake, the former director of scouting for the NBA, was a pioneer in the world of sports, spending over 60 years in professional basketball. He was born March 22, 1927, in Paterson, New Jersey, the son of two Russian Jewish immigrants, Elias and Ethel Blake. Blake grew up in Wyoming, Pennsylvania. After a stretch in the Army and graduation from Wilkes College, he entered the sports world. Alpharetta Middle School Student Dies on Spring Break

Roswell resident James McHenry attended Haynes Bridge Middle School.

Over the weekend, the families of North Fulton students learned the sad news that a local middle school student had been killed over spring break. Former Haynes Bridge Middle School and Hillside Elementary student James McHenry was vacationing with his family on Hutchinson Island last week when he was hit by a car Wednesday, April 3, according to a notice sent out by Hillside Principal Maisha Otway over the weekend. "Jamie, as he was called by his friends and family, attended Haynes Bridge Middle School," wrote Otway. "He was a former Hillside student and sibling to our dear [fifth] grade student Emily McHenry." Community Remembers Youth Umpire, Alpharetta UMC Member McDougald

Local resident Alvin McDougald, 58, died suddenly in his sleep on Sunday, March 10.

Ask pretty much anyone who knew him and they might tell you local resident and Alpharetta United Methodist Church member Alvin McDougald was an inspiration, a mentor, an encourager or a friend. But no matter how they describe the man beloved by so many local residents, they will most definitely tell you he will be missed. McDougald, 58, who died suddenly in his sleep on Sunday, March 10, was laid to rest Friday, March 15. A staple on the Roswell Youth Baseball Association (RYBA) umpire circuit, McDougald had been involved in local youth sports – including baseball and basketball – for 16 years.
