P.K. Beville, a geriatric specialist, founded Second Wind Dreams in 1997. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life for people living in elder-care communities and to change the perception of aging using the fulfillment of dreams and educational programs. Types and examples of dreams fulfilled include relationship-based dreams, such as reuniting brothers who have not seen each other in more than 40 years; needs-based, which could be giving a dress to someone so she can attend church again; life-long dreams, which could be graduating from high school or college; dreams for fun; reliving past experiences; and even Wake Up Sleeping Dreamers, in which staff and family consult in finding something the dreamer with dementia or Alzheimer's used to like to do or a place they like to visit.
