I was excited to take my 2 kids to the Humane Society. My kids are 4 and 12. We just went in with the intention of playing with the cats and dogs. Well first of all, when we walk into the facility there was a guy who was nice. Then I had some questions about volunteering, and he referred me to talk to the lady who I guess is one in charge. She was talking to some people at the time, and then he interrupted the conversation a minute just to let her know I wanted to ask some questions. She had the attitude of how dare you interrupt. Then when she was done with that conversation, she tried to be nice, and seemed a little put off by my questions. Well, I just kind of brushed that off. We went on to look at the cats. My 12 year old, Alexis, fell in love with one of the kittens. I said that we could adopt him. He was soooo adorable and friendly, and gave high fives. Alexis was sooooo excited about adopting him, and I thought there would be no reason they would not allow us to adopt. Well, come to find out that I was wrong. Because we have a cat that is an indoor outdoor cat, they would not let me adopt. Even though my cat has her vaccinations. They were quite rude to me about it, and I said that we would keep him indoors. Well, the kids were disappointed and crying, and it was heartbreaking. Not sure that we will go back there.

The Atlana Humane Society officially opened its Alpharetta campus on Mansell Road on Dec. 3, 2011. This was the first operational expansion for the Humane Society in 138 years. The 32,000-square-foot building no longer resembles a car dealership, which is what the building once housed.
The facility is located on seven acres just off of Mansell Road. The campus contains a 1,600 square foot clinic, four 1/4 acre enclosed free runs, 64 dog kennels, 32 puppie suites, 72 cat/kitten condos, and four free roam rooms for up to eight cats each. In total, the facility can handle between 64-138 dogs and 104-176 cats.
The facility has a covered receiving area. Being located so close to the Mansell Road interchange for GA 400 makes it easily accessible to Roswell and Sandy Springs residents as well. The campus serves Johns Creek and Milton as well.
The facility takes in admissions for families who can no longer keep their dogs and cats. There is a $40 fee, and you'll have to call first: 404.974.2847
But don't bring stray animals found in Fulton County here. By law those have to go to the Fulton County Animal Services, 860 Marietta Blvd., Atlanta, GA 30318

There will be more Fox 5 coverage. When people donate money to AHS, they should know (and will find out eventually) that the president, William Shaheen (who also works at his family's construction company) and the guy who was featured in the first Fox 5 segment, Richard Rice, drive cars paid for by the AHS.
Spectacular-looking facility, but a recent TV investigative series (Google "Randy Travis Fox 5 TV facebook" to see the videos) shows troubling "behind-the-scenes" problems including mulitple and unreported contagious diseases such as parvo, and an unwillingess to actually help homeless pets in metro Atlanta. Instead, according to the reports, they are actually travelling to other states to get pets...and even took in more animals from the Bahamas last year than Fulton County Animal Shelter where abandoned and stray pets from our area are taken, and where there is a 60+ percent euthanization rate.
There are so many worthy all-volunteer rescue organizations in this area...I recommend you contact one of them them for your next pet. (Go to www.petfinder.com for a list of shelters/groups.)

This facility is a joke. The woman at the front desk acts as if she would rather be getting a root canal than to be working there. She is incredibly rude and acts as if you are bothering her with your questions. I found a dog I really wanted to adopt however, my license recently expired and they would not accept a state issued birth certificate. Unbelievable. Do these people really want to find homes for these animals? It doesn't seem like it.
