Zack Eller Wins Humane Heroes Award

The Atlanta Humane Society held essay and art contests in recognition of Be Kind to Animal Week, and this Milton High School student was a winner.

In recognition of Be Kind to Animal Week, the announced winners of the art contest and essay nomination during a special awards ceremony at the Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center.

Zack Eller, a rising senior at , was the recipient of The Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award for his extraordinary works to benefit homeless pets.

Eller received the award, which honors Mariel Hannah, an 18‐year-old animal lover tragically killed in a 2006 home invasion. Two hundred‐word essay nominations were accepted for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 who have performed extraordinary acts of kindness to benefit animals.

Atlanta Humane Society employees selected Eller as the winner and he received a cash prize and plaque for his work on behalf of homeless pets. Eller’s main effort has been baking and selling dog biscuits to raise money for over a dozen pet rescue groups, the collection of pet food for donation and volunteer work.

“From a young age it is important to educate children on the humane treatment of animals and to make them aware of how special animals are,” said William Shaheen, president, Atlanta Humane Society. “It is wonderful to see children and teenagers using personal creativity to send a powerful message on this topic and to be recognized for their efforts. These two community‐oriented initiatives honor two individuals that truly had a passion for animals.”
