Rotary Club Gets $200,000 Grant for African Dam

The North Fulton club's project funds construction of a dam in Swaziland.

The Rotary Club of North Fulton won approval for a $200,000 grant to help build a dam in Africa.

The Rotary Foundation approved the international matching grant to support the construction of a third water retention dam on Heart for Africa’s Project Canaan site in Swaziland, Africa. The North Fulton Club, in efforts let by led by President-Elect Ben Hunter, has partnered with multiple Rotary clubs in metro Atlanta, the central U.S. and Canada to achieve the needed momentum for approval.

This grant, with total budget of $200,000, marks the second successful international grant in recent years for the North Fulton club, and it represents the largest international grant in the history of Rotary District 6900, which comprises approximately one third of all Rotary clubs in Georgia.

President-Elect Hunter noted, “This grant represents a huge step forward for our Club and the District. Not only does it show what is possible through Rotary, but it also proves how small clubs can have a major impact locally and abroad when they leverage resources with other Rotarians in other parts of the world.”

The Rotary Club of North Fulton is a small club with approximately 30 active members.

“Our club is small by design, but we deliver solid results.  We couldn’t have accomplished what we have without the help of Strib Stribling from Heart for Africa and Sally Platt and Bill Woulfin from the District,” Hunter said.

With more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide, Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto “Service Above Self.”
