North Fulton Community Charities Needs School Supplies, Volunteers

Back to School Fair distributes backpacks, other school supplies to low-income and disadvantaged children.

Back to school means time for supplies and perhaps a new backpack for the kids. But for some parents, the return to the classroom isn't that welcome because they don't have the money in the family budget to buy new school supplies.

North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) hosts its annual Back to School Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, Aug. 13 to make sure low-income and disadvantaged children start school with the supplies they need. This event provides students in grades K-12 with brand new backpacks filled with school supplies and provides parents with the resources they need to have a safe and healthy school year.

“I remember how excited my children would be after getting their new backpacks ready for the first day of school. They were energized and prepared," said Eden Purdy, Program Director at NFCC. "How would they have felt if I had to send them unprepared? How would their school year have been different? Most of us know the answer. NFCC wants to make sure every child in North Fulton starts school ready and empowered to succeed.

But NFCC needs donations of new backpacks, school supplies and financial donations. Donations can be brought to NFCC by Friday, Aug. 12.

In 2010, NFCC provided 1,488 children with new backpacks. With the ongoing economic recession, the charitable organization sees an average of 100 families a day struggling to make ends meet.
