Blessed Trinity's Baptiste Earns Top Coach Honors

Former college standout, pro player named best coach of female sports.

"Today we are honored to be recognizing the female sports coach of the year, Blesset Trinity Catholich High School's Gilbert Jean-Baptiste," Douglas said.

The Canada native's family emigrated from Haiti. He led his college soccer teams to two NCAA divisional championships and was named Player of the Year in 1999 for NCAA Division II.

He joined the Atlanta Silverbacks and was an assistant college coach before joining Blessed Trinity's faculty in 2004, writing the curriculum and teacher's guide for web design and advanced AP science courses.

In seven seasons as head coach of the girls soccer team, he's had six state championship title games, winning for of them. He's been state coach of the year four times as well.

Coach Jean-Baptiste grew up in Montreal, Canada, but is originally from Haiti. In 1995, he came to the United States where he attended Mercer County Community College for one year. During that season he was named Defender of the Year, Final Four All-Tournament, and First Team All-American. His team won the 1995 National Championship.

The following year Coach Jean-Baptiste transferred to Southern Connecticut State University where he earned his Bachelor's degree, majoring in Computer Science. As a senior, after three consecutive trips to the Final Four, he won the Men's Division II National Championship.

After a successful college career he signed his first professional contract with the Charleston Battery where he was named Rookie of the Year.

In 2002, he signed for the Atlanta Silverbacks.
