Community Corner
Commute Still Dangerous; Alpharetta Opens Community Center for Stranded Motorists
Traffic on some thoroughfares, including Hwy. 9, remained gridlocked even after 9 p.m.
Alpharetta has had roads closed and more obstructions. Hwy. 9 north remains backed up and nearly at a standstill, which has been true since about 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Driving conditions are so bad and with many motorists stranded, the City of Alpharetta is opening its Community Center for those "simply needing a warm place to stay until conditions improve," said Alpharetta Department of Public Safety spokesman George Gordon. The address is 175 Roswell Street, Alpharetta, GA.
"We have worked and are currently are working dozens of calls involving incidents such as traffic crashes, medical emergencies, stranded motorists, vehicle fires, road rage and other issues," Gordon said.
The icy conditions have caused many motorists to simply abandon their vehicles in the roadway. But that creates traffic hazards for other motorists – especially emergency responders, Gordon said.

The City of Alpharetta public works staff continue to aggressively sand roadways with tons of sand in an effort to improve roadway travel, he said.
"Please refrain from unnecessary travel and remain off the roadways. If you are stranded pull your vehicle to the shoulder," Gordon said.
