Alpharetta Youth Baseball Raises $10,000 to Cure Cancer

The Coaches Curing Kids Cancer tournament was deemed a success by its organizers despite Sunday's rain ending play early.

The Alpharetta Youth Baseball Association (AYBA) raised $10,000 for Coaches Curing Kids Cancer with a weekend tournament, according to Mike Olmstead of AYBA.

The funds will be used to help fund the best research treatments available for pediatric cancer. The money Coaches Curing Kids Cancer raises in Georgia is aimed at endowing the clinical research office at the Aflac Cancer Center, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, but also research nationwide.

This was an inaugural event for Alpharetta Youth Baseball as both and combined to form AYBA this past year. The AYBA Board and coaches Mike Olmsted, 10U Titans Head Coach and his staff as well as Andy Faw, 11U AYBA Eagle All Star and his staff were instrumental at organizing, running, and putting on this amazing event, as were Bill Lusby, AYBA commissioner, said Jeff Whitney, another AYBA supporter.

"We are extremely excited and proud of being associated with such a wonderful cause," Olmstead said in an email to supporters. "The generosity of time, resources and spirit from all involved was overwhelming. God has blessed each of us and our families in mighty ways."

Olmstead and Andy Faw of AYBA said they were grateful for every team, coach, umpire, volunteer, family and child who helped make the tournament such a wonderful event."

Rain put a stop to the tournament on Sunday, though it didn't slow the charitable work.

"Although we were not able to finish Sunday, everyone to a team, coach, player and parent were thankful and appreciative for the opportunity to raise funds for CCKC, teach our children how fortunate and blessed they really are, and to play the wonderful game of baseball at Webb Bridge and Wills Park," Olmstead said in the email.

Grand Slam Sports Center donated the Curing Kids Cancer engraved bats for the winners.
