Tiger Misses the Cut at PGA Championship

It was a bad week for Tiger Woods.

Not only did the most famous golfer in the world fail to make the cut at the PGA Championship, he also failed to pick up enough points to qualify for the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs.

Woods played better on Friday, following his miserable first-round 77 with a 73, but that was six away from making the cut. And by failing to pick up any FedEx Cup points, Woods didn't get in the Top 125 that qualify for the playoffs. That means he won't be playing at The Tour Championship next month at East Lake.

Wood had little chance to make the cut at the Atlanta Athletic Club when the day started, but all hope was lost when he made back-to-back double-bogeys at No. 11 and 12. In 36 holes, Woods had 12 holes where he posted bogey or higher and missed the cut at the PGA Championship for the first time in his career.

Defending PGA champion Martin Kaymer won't be around to win a second Wanamaker Trophy this weekend. He missed the cut after shooting a second-round 75 and landing one stroke outside the cutline at 145.

“Playing-wise, it was fine,” Kaymer said. “It's just nothing went in.”

Kaymer hit every green in regulation on the back nine, but made only one putt – that on the last hole.

“I was in good position, but it didn't happen,” he said. “It was a frustrating day.”

Reigning Masters champion Charl Schwartzel will get to hang around for the last two days, but British Open winner Darren Clarke will take an early exit. Schwartzel shot back-to-back 71s to make the cut at 2-over 142. Clarke, still flush from his victory at Royal St. George's last month, shot 78-76 and didn't come close.

“I'm just going away,” Clarke said. “I need a rest. I'm tired. I won't pick up the clubs for 10 days. I won't even look at them for 10 days. I'm just mentally tired. I need to have a rest.”

Former Etowah High School golfer Chris Kirk, an All-American at the University of Georgia, made the cut in his first PGA appearance. Kirk had a pair of 72s, leaving him one shot within the cutline at 144.

Stewart Cink of Duluth opened with an impressive 69, but followed that with a 78 on Friday and missed the cut by three shots. Heath Slocum of Alpharetta went the other way; he opened with an 80, but backed that up with a 67, which still missed the cut by three shots.

Craig Stevens, currently a PGA teaching professional at Steel Canyon Golf Course in Sandy Springs, shot 76-77 and finished 13 over.

Quitting time: Long-hitting J.B. Holmes decided he'd had enough after a first-round 80. The former Ryder Cup star withdrew after an opening round of 80, citing illness as the reason. Rocco Mediate withdrew after the first round with an arm injury, and Retief Goosen pulled out because of illness.
