Kickers Win Championship at Newtown Recreation League Playoffs

Nine-year-old girls make up most of the team, who faced mostly 10 year olds this season.

The Kickers of the Newtown Recreation League sports team won the championship in the 9-10 year old girls league this weekend, going 8-0 in the regular season before winning the 2-game playoff.

The girls beat the Cosmos 3-1  in the championship game Sunday afternoon, according to Coach Steve Nicholas.

Chloe Nicholas lead the team with two goals, with Noor Kayyali scoring the third goal against the Cosmos. The coach said other standouts include goalie Kendall Steward with six saves, forward Gracie Zimmerman, stopper Zoe Alper and sweeper Sara Andress.

"An interesting point of this team is it is primarily made up of 9-year-old players, while most of the other teams in our league are made up of primarily 10 year olds," Coach Nicholas said.

He coaches the team with Joe Zimmerman.
