Sandy Springs Mayor Sees Little Chance for Gwinnett Tech's North Fulton Campus

Mayor Galambos responds by pushing for a dual enrollment program at North Springs Charter High School.

If Sandy Springs does not , high school students could still have an opportunity to earn college credits.

; nothing will be presented for approval until the money is appropriated in the state budget, said Mike Light, director of Communications for the Technical College System of Georgia.

Mayor Eva Galambos said she is working with principal, Dr. Lisa Stueve, to bring a dual enrollment program with Gwinnett Tech to the high school. Students would earn credits for both a technical college degree and their high school diploma.

While no announcement has been made on which North Fulton city will be selected for a new Gwinnett Tech campus, the Mayor believes it's . Alpharetta and Roswell also submitted proposals for the site.

“I’m hoping we will make up for it by having the Gwinnett Tech dual enrollment with North Springs,” said Galambos during a talk to Leadership Sandy Springs.

In pushing for a local technical college campus, the Mayor has said that even in the current economy, business leaders have problems finding qualified . And corporations interested in relocating to new cities always look at the local school system.  

“I think we have to recognize that we have a very diverse population in terms of goals and outcomes…I think if [high school students] are not going to go to college, where are they going to prepare themselves to make a living,” she said. “We’ve got to become more aware of technical education.”
