Milton High Graduate Earns UGA Fellowship

Freeman researches and writes content for the Civil Rights Digital Library Web site and serves as a mentor in Athens.

A Milton High School graduate was one of three University of Georgia students to be named a Foundation Fellow.

JoyEllen Freeman of Alpharetta, who is pursuing bachelor's degrees in English and English education, was named a 2011 mid-term Foundation. The Foundation Fellows Program is the university’s premier undergraduate scholarship program and provides academic and cultural enrichment opportunities, including internships, research and study abroad.

Freeman is already preparing for a teaching career with her research as a participant in UGA’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities Apprentice program. She has been working under the guidance of English professor Barbara McCaskill, who is co-director of the Civil Rights Digital Library. Freeman researches and writes content for the online archive’s companion Web site that focuses on Georgia’s civil rights movement.

“I am honored to be part of an extraordinary group of scholars who are intelligent, driven and who seek to make a difference on a global scale,” said Freeman.

Freeman serves as a mentor and tutor for adolescents through the in Athens. She also is a poetry editor for the Mandala Journal, an online student-run multicultural journal published through UGA’s Institute for African American Studies.

Other recipients were Camille Gregory of Brentwood, Tenn., who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in geography; and Waring “Buck” Trible III, of Fredericksburg, Va., who is pursuing bachelor’s degrees in entomology and ecology.
“I am very pleased to welcome JoyEllen, Camille, and Buck to the Foundation Fellowship,” said David S. Williams, director of the Honors Program and Foundation Fellowship.

Eligibility requirements include a minimum cumulative 3.85 GPA for students enrolled in the third semester of the Honors Program. During the last two years of undergraduate study, mid-term Fellows receive a scholarship that approximates the cost of university attendance. They also receive grants for travel-study, research and conference participation.
