North Fulton Students Need Canned Food Competition, Food Pantry

The race is on to help North Fulton high schools end hunger in the Atlanta community through the collection of canned food items. But unlike the usual canned food drive, students are using the donated cans as a real-world lesson to sharpen their architectural design skills.

Fulton County Schools has joined the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, North Point Mall, and the architectural firm of Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood to host the first-ever Atlanta area “Can Do Good” social design competition. The competition asks local high schools to hold canned food drives and then design and build an imaginative structure made completely of those cans and other non-perishable food items.

The high school teams still need cans to reach their collection goals in time for the building competition, which is this Saturday, Nov. 10. Donations are being accepted through the end of the week at eight high schools in North Fulton:

• Alpharetta High School – 3595 Webb Bridge Road, Alpharetta
• Cambridge High School – 2845 Bethany Bend, Milton
• Centennial High School – 9310 Scott Road, Roswell
• Independence High School – 86 School Drive, Alpharetta
• Johns Creek High School – 5575 State Bridge Road, Johns Creek
• North Springs Charter High School – 7447 Roswell Road, Sandy Springs
• Northview High School – 10625 Parsons Road, Johns Creek
• Roswell High School – 11595 King Road, Roswell

The canned food structures, to be built by students at North Point Mall on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, will be judged on their architectural integrity and creativity with winners announced at noon. After judging, the structures will be left on display for the next week and then disassembled and donated to local food banks.
