Cambridge High Debate Team Qualifies for State Championship

The sophomore and freshman duo won in competition against mostly upperclassmen in a recent tournament.

The Cambridge High School Debate team consisting of Nico Leis and Madison Landis qualified to compete in the Georgia Varsity State Championship by the team finishing as co-champions of a tournament.

They competed at the Sequoyah Autumn Argument at Sequoyah High School in Cherokee County, where they won a bid to the state championship. Nico won the third speaker award at the Sequoyah  Autumn Argument. Madison was in the top third as a speaker. There were 34 speakers total.

It was a special win for Cambridge High School since it is a relatively new new school and they have been working hard to develop the debate club. Debate seems to have a solid future at Cambridge, as Madison is a freshman and Nico is a sophomore. The state championship is filled mostly with juniors and seniors.

Usually freshmen are considered novices and only compete in Jr. Varsity, but Madison joined Nico as his debate partner this year and he has been coaching her. He serves as captain and coach of the team.

Cambridge teacher Madeleine Patrick is the sponsor of the club.
