Alpharetta, Milton College Students Earn University Honors

Students receive scholarships, earn places in honor societies and take home academic awards.

Georgia Southern Students Receive Scholarships

Georgia Southern University's Annual Honors Day Convocation was held at the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center recently. Individual awards were presented to 188 students and various honor societies also recognized new inductees.

Held each spring to highlight distinguished students from all disciplines and areas of college life, the following local students were honored:

  • April Berlyoung from Alpharetta received the Bill Ponder Chemistry Scholarship.
  • Matthew McMahan from Alpharetta received the Daniel B. Good Geography Scholarship.
  • Charles Witkowski from Alpharetta received the John F. Nolen Student Government Association Scholarship.

Georgia Southern University, a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University founded in 1906, offers 125 degree programs serving more than 20,500 students.

Alpharetta, Milton Students Initiated into Honor Society

The following local students recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

The following 8 students were granted an achievement for being inducted into Phi Kappa Phi at The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi:

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Local Residents Named to Oglethorpe University's Dean's List

The following college students were named to Oglethorpe University's dean's list for the fall 2012 semester.

  • Monica Watanabe, a communication and rhetoric studies and psychology major from Alpharetta.

Students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average while maintaining a full-time class schedule during the semester to be named to the Dean's List.

High School Seniors Attend University's Scholars' Day

Georgia Southern University welcomed more than 250 outstanding high school seniors from Georgia and across the U.S. for the 11th annual Scholars' Day last month. The event provided top high school students with the opportunities to interview for academic and leadership scholarships along with positions in the University Honors Program.

The students are among the best and brightest at their high schools with outstanding SAT or ACT scores and GPA. Those seniors and their parents also attended information sessions to learn about engineering, nursing and education degrees along with other majors offered at Georgia Southern.

Local students who participated in the event included:

  • Lanre Shitta-Bey from Alpharetta
  • Kevin Toler from Alpharetta

Alpharetta Students Recognized at Reinhardt's Honors Day

Several local students were among the 96 students and one faculty member recognized at Reinhardt University's Honors Day on April 7.

Haley Camplone, a senior from Alpharetta, was honored as a Hugh Peterson Jr. Academic Scholar.

Kaitlyn Ellis, a senior from Alpharetta, was honored as the School Student Achievement Award recipient for the School of Mathematics & Sciences, as an Academic Degree Program Award recipient for biology, and as a Reinhardt University Academic Scholar.

Meaghan Stokes, a senior from Alpharetta, was honored as a Reinhardt University Academic Scholar.

Dr. David Gregory, associate professor of music and resident of Big Canoe, was honored with the Elizabeth Moss Bailey Faculty Mentor Award. This award is decided upon by the Student Government Association. It recognizes the faculty member who best exemplifies the University mission, who affects lives for the better, who integrates faith and learning and who educates the whole person.
