Milton Receives Funding for Trails

The money will be used by the city to develop a concept plan on connecting greenways with those of Roswell, Forsyth County and Alpharetta.

The city of Milton has been awarded funding explore the possibility of connecting pathways with surrounding jurisdictions.

Milton has received $200,000 in Transportation Alternative Program, or TAP, funding for its proposed Bethany Road, Cogburn Road and Windward Parkway trail connectors.

Public Works Director Carter Lucas said the money will be used to allow the city to draft a concept plan and "understand the possibilities of making a regional connection to the greenways of Forsyth County, Alpharetta and Roswell."

TAP is a federal program that promotes the development of non-motorized forms of transportation.

Along with enhancing access and safety for current modes of transportation, TAP funding also supports efforts to expand trail networks that are designed to connect residents in a regional manner, according to the Atlanta Regional Commission, which administers TAP funding.

ARC Spokesman Jim Jaquish said the agency worked with local cities and counties to determine the best way the funds could be used "to impact the region while also helping at the local level."

They accepted applications from local entities and chose the projects that matched criteria established earlier in the process. Those projects will be added to the ARC's short- and long-range regional transportation plans, Jaquish added.

TAP is a continuation and/or combination of the former Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School and Recreational Trail programs that were established under previous federal funding legislation.
