Milton Grows Green Needs Volunteers to Clean Up the Town

Rivers Alive 2011 sends local residents to streams to clean trash out of waterways.

On Saturday volunteers will be cleaning up waterways in Milton, in the annual Rivers Alive event sponsored by Milton Grows Green and .

The cleanup will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m., with the kickoff at 255 Hickory Flat Road, one mile west of the Birmingham Crossoads. Staging begins at this location, and volunteers will be dispatched throughout Milton neighborhoods to reach streams.

Rivers Alive is a waterways cleanup, education and protection program.

"Come on out and help us clean our rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands here in Milton by joining in support of Rivers Alive," said Bill Bailey, owner of Bailey Farm and Gardens and sponsor of the event.

Volunteers will be assigned based on age and capabilities to predetermined local waterways to remove debris deposited from upstream and left by passers-by. Bring waders and boots to get in the river and do some "deep" cleaning.

Children 12 and under will have opportunities to apply storm drain markers in a local neighborhood or help at school sites. The "Drains to Streams" marking program is part of the Georgia Clean Water Campaign and is also designed to remind everyone of the connection between what goes down storm drains and the quality of drinking water.
