Milton Considers How To Spend MARTA Funds

At this week's Work Session, the Milton City Council discussed what to do with the $181,000 left over for improving MARTA Transportation in Milton.

Milton has spent two-thirds of the funds MARTA gave the city to enhance transportation facilities for the transit agency in the city, but the City Council can't decide how to spend the remaining funds.

Seven different projects were proposed initially, and the three chosen cost $413,818 to complete.

Now the City Council must determine how to spend the remaining $181,000. The three projects suggested by the Public Works Director Carter Lucas during the Dec. 12 council workshop at were:

  • Sidewalk improvements;
  • More bus shelters;
  • Gateway signs & streetscapes

Lucas urged the council to consider the sidewalk improvements. He felt this would benefit MARTA users the best, but the council was not entirely sold on the project.

Julie Zahner Bailey felt the money should be spent to purchase land around the Highway 9 area. She said the money could go to more pocket parks in Milton.

The City Council decided the proposal was not clear enough and asked that Lucas bring back a plan at the next Work Session. The council members wanted to know exactly which sidewalks would be improved with the funds.
