Lance Large Plans to Resign from Milton City Council

Three other council seats and the mayor's post already were up for election in November.

Lance Large plans to resign from Milton City Council this fall, which will require the city to hold a special election to fill his vacant seat.

Large said his wife's work will take them back to Virginia, so he will need to resign from office. He wants to work on council for as long as he's able to serve.

She's the executive director of the Virginia Land Title Association," a position Large said she's held for more than 10 years.

"Recently it's come to the point where they'd like to continue the relationship, but they'd like to see her back in Virginia," he said. "So she's relocating back to Virginia and of course she would like me to come with her."

The couple will relocate after they sell their house in Milton.

Large was born and raised in Virginia, and had lived in the Norfolk area for 13 years before he met his wife.

He works as an engineering consultant. "Just about all of my work has been back in southeastern Virginia."

Milton has been the nicest place they've lived, he said.

Working on the council was positive as its members were able to work well together, agreeing to disagree. A recent success for him in council was getting the chemical waste drop-off funded.

"I think the city's attitude toward growth and responsible growth has changed. To me it has been a positive thing," Large said.

Two years remain in Large's term for the District 3/Post 2 council seat. Council members are elected to four year terms in staggered elections.

Large defeated incumbent Alan Tart in the November 2011 election and began his term in January 2012.

In the regular municipal election being held Nov. 5, council seats held by incumbents Joe Longoria, Karen Thurman and Bill Lusk will be on the ballot, as will Mayor Joe Lockwood's seat.

The city believes Large's seat will be filled in the November election also. The city charter states that the council must call for the special election. The issue is under legal review, Wright said.
Qualifying is scheduled for Monday-Friday, Aug. 26-30, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Candidates must file for candidacy for the desired position with the City Clerk at City Hall. The fees for qualification are:

  • Mayor – $690
  • City Council – $390
