Get Off the Phone: Banning Cellphones for Drivers

Would you be for a total ban of cellphone use by drivers?

 

Let's face it: most of us would be lost were it not for our cellphones. Be it chatting, checking e-mails, sending texts or scanning social networks, smartphones allow you to do it all, from anywhere - including the car.

But the National Transportation Safety Board wants to put an end to any kind of cellphone usage for drivers. On Tuesday, the five-member group recommended a complete and total ban on cellphone usage - including hands-free - while driving, except in emergency cases, according to an Associated Press story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The NTSB also encouraged the wireless industry to develop technology restricting a driver's ability to use a cellphone while a vehicle is moving for anything other than 911 calls.

The safety board hopes such a move would curb deadly accidents caused by cell phone usage. But the recommendation still has a way to go before it might be made into law.
